During WW2, France was occupied by Nazi Germany. The French decided to stand up to Nazi Germany occupation forces and the "French Resistance" was born. The French Resistance movement is an umbrella term which covered numerous anti-German resistance movements that were based within France. These were formed of different groups. There were groups operating under directions from British Setup, there was a group loyal to Charles De Gaulle, another one stood as communist resistance etc. They even had different aims; some went just after German soldiers, others had Vichy French along with Wehrmacht/German forces in its sights. They were sporadic at start but slowly became organised, forming different small groups and then joining together to become one Big Resistance group. But it was not just the French Resistance standing up to German Occupation - France was far from a nation of resisters. Anti-Nazi partisans in Yugoslavia, Poland and Greece were far more effective and constituted a substantially higher percentage of the population of each country. This shows that there are modern resistance movements like Chechniya etc that have almost succeeded at times. Kashmiris of Indian occupied Kashmir have examples all around them to form a unified structure of resistance. Bear in mind that Britain couldn't support French directly due to distance and its won fragile situation during early years of WW2, so both sides collaborated in all means possible to any extent possible. Pakistan at the moment is also fighting its own war on western front and LOC just like Britain was fighting its war in WW2 at different theaters, but the support system from Pakistan is considered vital for Kashmiris to create situation that could lead to successful independence from occupying Indian forces.
The relationship between Britain and the French Resistance movement was vital. Britain, via the British Command structure of SOE (Special operation Executive), supplied the French with equipment and trained agents. The French Resistance, in turn, supplied vital intelligence reports. This is almost the same trend that was followed between Indian Government and Mukti Bahini in 1971 against Pakistan. The Kashmiris has however, not been very effective in either of this for Pakistan. In case of Kashmiris, they have China in the North which could also support their cause considering the hostility between China and India.
As the years progressed in WW2, the intelligence cells increased in French Resistance, whose task was solely to collect intelligence as opposed to carrying out acts of sabotage. They gathered information which became vital in operational planning for D-day. After the war, Supreme Allied Commander in Europe General Dwight D. Eisenhower grandly estimated the French Resistance had been worth “an extra six divisions.” The intelligence set up by kashmiri resistance can also prove significant for Pakistan, especially considering the ongoing warfare on LOC. The weak positions (in terms of supply and logistics), target acquisition for artillery and most importantly live intel of military movement can help Pakistan in organizing its defenses along LOC and also providing support to kashmir movement of independence by transferring assets and supplies. Such supplies can become crucial during times of curfew in Indian Occupied Kashmir, when there is little hope from any support from other states of India even.
The French Resistance also helped POWS (British and other nationalities) escape through a unified network of resistance groups. These POWS rejoined and came back to fight the Nazi Germans on different fronts again. This gives hope not just to the people under oppression but also the information brought back by POW's was important for allied forces. Time and again, Kashmiri protesters seeking independence have been apprehended and hauled into trucks destined towards prisons and jails. This is a major area where a clot of coordination is required between Kashmiri resistance groups of Indian Occupied Kashmir who need to devise mechanisms of escape for their comrades languishing in jails with their fates to be written by Indian Government. Mounting such rescue attempts will help bolster the morale of the local kashmiris and the freed kashmiris will live another day to join hand in hand once again with their comrades for freedom of Kashmir from occupying Indian Forces.
The French Resistance first revealed itself as underground publishers of anti-Nazi broadsides and mimeographed mini-newspapers. It was an offense that could get one arrested, jailed, tortured or even executed, so this was indeed resistance. Clandestine publishing also made good use of the talents of these early French partisans, for many were intellectuals and had no idea how to fire a gun. There are intellectuals, highly educated students of different fields and academic backgrounds in Indian occupied Kashmir. Publishing own newspapers, writing articles describing horror of atrocities carried out by occupying Indian forces as well as documenting day to day life and running it on social media is another significant step that should be undertaken by kashmiris living in Indian occupied Kashmir to voice their concerns to the world.
In France, Jews were another major group of resisters, for obvious reasons. Accounting for just 1 percent of the population in an infamously anti-Semitic country, they were said to comprise 15 to 20 percent of its Resistance. In India, the caste system has created divide among higher caste and lower caste. The lower caste feels oppressed and Kashmiris should join hands with them and welcome them as allies, even with a difference in religion. For Indian occupied Kashmir's freedom, the religious divide should be set aside.
The French Resistance had planned specific, well-coordinated sabotage campaigns against railroads, power networks, highways, fuel and ammunition depots, command centers and communications lines to aid the invasion they knew was inevitable. This could require the Kashmiri freedom fighters to maintain the pressure on Indian forces by conducting such operations which hinders their movements and obstructs their planning strategies from becoming fruitful. The damage to the infrastructure will ofcourse be there but this would incur more cost to India than kashmiris themselves since all forms of reliable communication and logistics is vital for Indian occupying forces to operate with full capacity. Weakening the hold of occupying forces should be the fist step for Kashmiris leading to their freedom from oppression of India and Indian Military.
At the end of WW2, it was ascertained that most Frenchmen were neither collaborators nor resisters; they just kept their heads down and tried to get enough to eat, which was extremely difficult in Paris, where citizens suffered with near-starvation rations. This is going to be the case in Kashmir also, some will join the resistance for freedom, others may just stay on the back foot, yet anyone can forward to help make a continuous struggle for freedom in different ways. However, its usually a handful of men who start with a vision having a burning desire in hearts for freedom, fueled by aim to save the coming generations from the slavery of an oppressive regime. It is these men who stand up for freedom of their land from the rule of tyranny, just like the French Resistance did for their country and freedom.
