Legal action if anyone tries to visit Israel from Bangladesh: foreign minister

ALL BARK AND NO BITE

show it on the passport coward
We won't burn down our own country over something the government does... That's us harming our own country...

The sorts who do these sorts of things have been taught a good lesson in the past few months.. so it's only logical they're nowhere to be seen right now.

All for the better... Burning public property down does nothing to Israel.
Most countries have peaceful demonstrations to voice opinions to demonstrate the popularity and importance of their voice.

Then what's the point of the exercise of removing Israel from Bangladeshi passports? It would've been if the Foreign Ministry just reiterated its position of not recognizing Israel. End of story.

Now it went through this convoluted exercise of removing Israel from passports, still not recognizing Israel, and now threatening to prosecute anyone who goes to Israel!

What the hell is Bangladesh saying?
This exercise is mostly about enhancing the acceptability of Bangladeshi passport. This sentence 'except Israel' create a bad impression about Bangladesh when a Bangladeshi citizen face of the immigration officers in Western Countries. Western countries have a strong sense of not discriminating against Jews and Israel. So singling out Israel in passport among all those 200 countries give them the impression that this country Bangladesh and it's people are Anti-Semitic. For Malaysia who also have 'except Israel' tag in the passport is not much of a problem as they are a wealthy nation, but for poor Bangladesh, impression is already bad, and 'except Israel' tag only worsen that impression many folds when a Bangladeshi citizen travel in the West.

Agreed but when your minister says publicly that govt is going to prosecute people for going to Israel that kind of defeats the point of not appearing anti semitic.

Mainly this move came from the middle east and western pressure. Espacially saudi and uae.

Middle east is still a massive source of income and source of job for the lower income people in BD. And remittance is a massive source of income for govt. So despite all the drumming, GOB cannot irritate the sheikhs..

I guess sooner or later ( by the end of the year?) we will be seeing a israeli consulate in Dhaka..
It seems joke ..they have removed restriction legally binded on passport and now just passing remarks for Media , I think ...anyhow bangladesh acceptance of Israel has not sparked any reaction locally it seems
Local reactions will only happen if and only after Israel opens a consulate in Dhaka. GOB as done well by giving a confusing messages out. Keeps everyone confused but interested parties happy.

Last thing Govt needs is another round of protest in the middle of pandemic. Espacially when govt is already on the ropes due to pandemic mismanagement.

@Anubis , an input for you as we were talking about the issue in another thread.

Afaik Bangladeshi lawmakers and businessmen visited Jerusalem and Tel Aviv in the past...more will do now...all these talk of prosecution didn't apply to them...only guy to ever been prosecuted was the weekly blitz editor that too because he was allegedly smuggling documents there... and no common people would have any need to visit Israel any time in the near future...Bangladesh is on track to establish some form of relationship with Israel..but obviously won't make a sudden recognition and risk protests.
Bangladesh sporadically sells some unknown goods to Israel. Amd they are bold enough to have them recorded...Imagine what we are selling to them/buying from them that are not recorded or recorded as import/export through other countries.
https://en.prothomalo.com/business/Bangladesh-exports-unknown-goods-to-Israel

Whatever agenda WION might have the report might not be completely unsubstantiated.

No one is advocating or expecting any outrage dancing public property ..there are many peaceful protest all around the world.my thought was only as I have seen in past peaceful protest there .at the end it's totally upto bangladesh for normalizing any ties with Israel ..and majority conscious is in agreement with government .normally opposition parties have different views ..what's opposition saying on it ?

BNP slams govt over Israel issue

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir

Stating that Israel is a threat to the entire world, BNP on Sunday questioned as to why the Awami League government is trying to develop a relationship with that country by removing the words "except Israel" in the new passport.

“The Home Ministry has decided to remove the word ‘except Israel’ from the new passport. There’s a consensus among our people that Israel is our enemy as they’ve destroyed human rights,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir while speaking at a press conference at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office.

He said: “Israel is a threat not only to the Middle East but also to the entire world. Why’s the Bangladesh government going to build a loving relationship with Israel?"

Fakhrul said there is a correlation between the government’s move to remove the word “expect Israel” from the passport and Al Jazeera's report that Bangladesh bought a surveillance device or spying equipment originally made by Israel.

“That’s why there’s a fear among the people of the country whether the government is going to make such an agreement again with Israel or whether it's going to do something else. We all know Israel is the best in the world in terms of intelligence,” Fakhrul said.

He said people are observing with deep concern the government’s new move regarding Israel.

About BNP’s position on Israel, he said: “We would like to make it clear BNP has no link with Israel. We’ve an anti-Israel stance. “We’ve always been against Israel. We’re still in the same position.”

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said there has been no change in Bangladesh's position towards Israel as it still does not recognize Israel.

Talking to UNB, he also said removing the words like valid for travelling “except Israel” in the new passport does not mean that there has been a change in Bangladesh’s position.

Fakhrul alleged that the government has been running the country depending on bureaucracy as it has lost ground beneath its feet for lack of public support.

He also said the government is now letting loose detectives against journalists and creating obstacles to publishing many reports by giving various instructions.

BNP couldn't pick up a cat slam it if their life depended on it. Maybe they will start protest after Eid.

Israel provide separate entry exit receipt for countries those create problem for visiting Israel.

Bangladeshi government will have no way to control that. As the except Israel part is removed so there will be no barrier to go to Israel.

Many are considering it as a first step to normalizing relation to Israel. As in future if Bangladeshi government needs to normalize the relationship they would not have to go through this process of removal the name of Israel.
Then what's the point of the exercise of removing Israel from Bangladeshi passports? It would've been if the Foreign Ministry just reiterated its position of not recognizing Israel. End of story.

What the hell is Bangladesh saying?
Can any of the Bangladeshi posters explain what their reasoning is to removing two to three words and at such a time like this? Some of our leaders were good friends with Yasser Arafat and if I remember there was a whole Bangladeshi regiment which fought alongside PLO during their battle against the Jordanians?
Just answer one question -

If Bangladesh does not recognise Israel, why is it writing "valid in all countries except Israel"? If Bangladesh does not recognise Israel, it should behave as if there is nothing called Israel but only Palestine. But, writing such a sentence shows that Bangladesh recognises Israel but simply does not like Israel. So, the whole point of not recognising Israel stands moot when Bangladesh is openly mentioning the word "Israel" in their passports. It is like giving Israel the highest importance of all other countries in the world, though it is a negative importance/hate.

I still think that this BD government are a bunch of turds at times as they should have just kept it as it is.

Even if the Arabs pressured BD, then it should have stuck to its guns as there are red lines that it should not cross like what it writes on its own passport.

UAE/KSA pressure is my guess. they probably threatened to deport Bd nationals and rohingya.

So they decided to fold over migrant workers? Sometimes the trade off to being a gad

Arab government(s) (note I said government) are sellouts and unfortunately we've had to join that posse. It demonstrates how easy it is to make BD fold fearing that a few hundred thousand migrant workers being sent back to BD. In the name of development, we've sold our souls. What a trade off.

These Sheikhs must be laughing their *** off right now.

The path of Bangladeshi policy making seems to change time and time again, worse than a woman on their reds.

that's my guess. But its most likely. that's were remittances come from

The UAE decided to reward Myanmar by opening up an embassy there just after what happened in 2019 . The Rohingya issue is used as a ploy to involve BD in yemen (BD will only conduct de-mining ops).
