Singapore's success story is closely intertwined to the leadership of Lee Kuan Yew. It can be argued that without him, Singapore might not be the bustling, prosperous metropolis it is today. The standard of living has risen dramatically for ordinary Singaporeans, and corruption has been largely eradicated. Singapore is the envy of many from around the world today. Lee was also responsible for leading the PAP to resounding electoral successes and overseeing its rightward shift.

Lee Kuan Yew is over hyped politician - its wrong to credit him for the country's prosperity . The successful economic policies that transformed Singapore belong to Dr Albert Winsemius, a Dutch economist sent by the United Nations in 1960 to help Singapore industrialize. It was Dr Winsemius who came up with Singapore’s economic plan which Singapore judiciously adopted. Its Dr Winsemius who should be credited for transforming Singapore

I can't forget the great mind that was Sukarno. One of my favorite leaders in ASEAN history, actually.

Not really, he is your typical Pink Socialist minded leader you can found at today Latin American countries like Maduro, Chavez, Dilma Roussef and so on. Too much anti-western rethoric and tend to neglect economic progress and development for the sake of National Revolution with an empty promises. It's true he is a great orator and have a great affection toward Political history and his capability to speak in at least seven different language made him a flexible National diplomat (he is capable to speak in Dutch, Indonesia, Arab, Japanese, English, Germany, Russia and Javanese) , but he is not a great leader with clear vision and clear objective. Not to mention he is woman enemy, a carnivore, a womanizer.

The society Lee Kuan Yew promised under the dream of socialism are

• security of employment,
• compensation in re-settlement for attap dwellers,
• assistance of local manufacturer,
• national health insurance,
• free education.

Today, he accuse anyone who fall out of society as lazy and stupid. He put everyone in debt.

Kuan Yew is also a protector and advocate for the worst financial feces. During 2008 financial crisis whereby banks here cook toxic, lied, scam ripping off billions in Singapore, Kuan Yew defended them.

Lee is no matter what one of the most renowned politicians in the Chinese world. His success in Singapore undoubtedly show us, Mainland China, KMT in Taiwan, and all other Chinese communities around the world, old Chinese values and their unique government form are never outdated. He has also set a successful example for China, how a centralised non-democratic government can also have a well-operated legal system.

I respect your viewpoints toward Lee.
But still, without his strong administration, Singapore will be just like some loser countries in the developing world.
Of course, Singapore will be making even bigger progress. However, without the foundation his team has laid, Singapore is going nowhere.

I personally dislike Mao, what he has done was unforgivable.
But without the industrial foundation before 1980, there would be no post-1980 development. 3 decades later, my city Wuhan still benefits from it, Wuhan Steel, Wuhan's shipyards, Wuhan's education, Wuhan's transportation. That's some points where a lot of members here misread about China, merely attributing all China's development today to post-1980 era. Even before 1980, China's major index was much better than India（illiteracy rate,life expectancy, power generation, sanitation facilities, etc).

Before Kuan Yew, Singapore is the most prosperous state in SE Asia. Without him, we are still going to be numero uno in SE Asia. But will we reach this level of wealth is still debatable but we are definitely going to be sucessful with him or without him around.

HK governor brag their sleep in their job euphemism as "laissez faire". HK got even better.
