Professor attack case: Police finds role of 20 people


KOCHI: The investigation team has found the role of 20 people in connection with the cutting off palm of Thodupuzha Newman College Professor T.J.Joseph. It has also been confirmed that these 20 people have split into four groups, stayed at various places before carrying out the attack on professor.

Jaffar, who was arrested in connection to the incident, has revealed that the operation of attack against the professor was planned months ago but the date to carry out the operation was decided only a week ago. The police believe Jaffar knows more about the assailants. Police have brought him into custody for further questioning.

Meanwhile, the Indica car (KL-AP 1613) in which the assailants are suspected to have fled away after handing the Omni van to Jaffar, was found out from the house of Younus, the president of Muvattupuzha Division of Popular Front. The Indica car belongs to Younus who is supposed to be the chief conniver of the operation.

Police got information about the assailants from the driving licence of K.K.Ali who had purchased the van from Lawrence of Thrissur. There were many activists of Popular Front along with Ali at time of purchasing the van from Lawrence. The van was bought after fixing the date of operation. Although these activists got instruction not to change the name of RC Book of the van, Lawrence forced Ali to give his driving licence, which later helped the police get information of the assailants.

The persons including Ali who went to buy the van did not know at that time for what purpose they were instructed to buy it.

The assailants started from Kothamangalam for carrying out the operation on Sunday morning. Six men were there inside the Omni van at the time of operation. The van was piloted by four persons in two motorbikes. The pilots’ duty was only to help the team in the van reach the destination.

Professor TJ Joseph was returning home with his family after attending church when a car-borne gang with knives and swords stopped his car and pulled him out. They chopped off Joseph's right hand, and after the operation the van was handed to Jaffar who was waiting for them at Irumalappadi. According to the version of Jaffar, the assailants fled away in the Indica car bought from Younus.

Jaffar was arrested while he was on the way to hand over the van to Ashraf. Ashraf said to the police that he was directed to hide the van until next duty was assigned. The police believe that there must be one more gang who has waited for Ashraf in order to take away the van.

Meantime, police team led by DySP P.Jagannathan searched the house of Manzoor at Aluva on Tuesday. Manzoor, who has been an activist of NDF, is the Ernakulam District Secretary of Popular Front. It is known that police got some important documents from Manzoor’s house. Police also raided the houses of various activists of Popular Front. Many of the leaders are absconding and there cell phones are switched off.

An alleged member of a radical Muslim outfit, accused of attacking a Kerala lecturer, has now threatened a police officer probing the case, police said on Tuesday. “Rasheed (30), an activist of the Popular Front of India, criminally intimidated Circle Inspector Famous Varghese, a member of the investigation team,” said Rural SP T. Vikram.

According to the police, Rasheed, who is the district secretary of the front, threatened the officer with dire consequences if he continued raiding the houses of its activists.

The police had raided the houses of Rasheed and other activists soon after Sunday’s attack on Malayalam lecturer T.J. Joseph, in which his right hand was chopped off.

The attack took place at Muvattupuzha in Ernakulam district, about 220 km north of the state capital.

Jospeh had earlier been sent to jail for preparing a blasphemous question paper that allegedly made derogatory references to Prophet Mohammed.

The Popular Front, formed in 2006, was accused last year of carrying out a ‘love jihad’, under which activists allegedly lured women from other faiths into marriage and then forced them to convert to Islam.
