Lecturer's hand chopped off in India

Hahaa, actually I was gifted a book by Dr Zakir Naik by one of my close Pakistani friend here. There is even a web page of his organization.
Of course the book does not have any extremist views rather how Islam compares to other religions and the commonness with all other major religions.
He himself made a number of questions on Islam and left them unanswered, with a line"Under Progress". Now this I found most absurd.
But if this is his platform for enticing people into radicalization, then surely it is a very worrying trend.
Most importantly of all the Muslim friends I have here, it is only from Pakistan that speak highly of him.

An eye for an eye -
One of the most misquoted lines from the Torah. Rabbis have made it clear for thousands of years that this only refers to monetary compensation for an injury sustained, not revenge.

So where is this lecturer's livelihood going to come from?

.
I remember one dialogue from Blood diamond movie.

"Will God ever forgive us for what we have done to each other. But I when I get up and look around, I realise.

God left this place a long time ago..."

They are going to write a 100 page essay on every single question.

lol

but seriously they probably will

His hands have been joined and he is doing fine.
Hope he will be back to teaching though he has been suspended after the blasphemy issue by authorities.

How can they suspend a man for blasphemy when blasphemy itself is not a crime in India. I suspect that they must have given a moronic excuse of public disturbance. The college should be penalised for this. What use is a centre of learning when there is no freedom of though in there.

From what I read of the question, there is nothing in there which could have hurt anyone's feelings. By their actions, the college has encouraged these extremists.

It was more of a goodwill gesture. He was suspended coz there was an inquiry regarding it by the exam boards.

Kerala: Islamic court ordered chopping of professor's hand

It was a Taliban-model court Darul Khada (God's abode or God's court) which ordered the chopping off the palm of Professor T D Joseph, the Malayalam professor of Newman's College, Thodupuzha, recently.

The shocking revelation had come during the interrogation of Popular Front activist Ashraf, who is the first accused in the case. Joseph was accused of preparing an internal question paper for second year B Com students of the college, which outraged the Muslim community, who found it defamatory to Prophet Mohammed.

A group of eight persons, allegedly members of the Popular Front of India, had waylaid Joseph and chopped off his right palm, while he was returning from his Sunday mass at the local Nirmala church in Muvattupuzha, along with his mother and sister.

Sources in the state police told rediff.com that Ashraf had spilled the beans that the Islamic court, which was functioning in Kerala under the auspicious of the Popular Front, had given the sentence to chop off the right hand of Prof Joseph, for 'blasphemy to Prophet Mohammed.'

Police sources also informed that Eaasa Moulavi was the Kerala coordinator of the Darul Khada, and this particular case was decided by its branch in Eearattupettah, in Kottayam district, which is very near to Muvattupuzha, the site of the incident.

Those arrested have also confirmed to the police that the Popular Front is interfering in several family disputes involving Muslim families in the state, and trying to persuade them to come to Darul Khuda, and not to other courts, to settle their disputes.

The state police have appraised the central intelligence agencies about these developments.

^^^There should be no such "Islamic courts" functioning in India and if some one is doing this then they should be punished under the usual penal provisions under the Indian penal code for inciting murder and bodily harm. The Muslim personal law covers legal aspects for Muslim in personal affairs but criminal law is under the Indian penal code and is common for all Indians. Almost all major Muslim as well as other organizations have already condemned the attack on the professor and asked for punishment against the perpetrators.

Muslim leaders condemn the attack on Kerala academician | TwoCircles.net

New Delhi: We strongly condemn yesterday's violent attack and chopping off of the hand of Mr T. J. Joseph, a lecturer in Ernakulam District of Kerala by some miscreants on the pretext of taking revenge for Joseph's act of blasphemy.

We feel that law was taking its due course against the said lecturer for his misdeed and he was already suspended from his college for a year due to his insult to the Prophet of Islam by replacing the word "madman" in a quote with that of "Muhammad" while preparing an exam paper for the students of his college.

Those who attacked Joseph forgot that the Prophet of Islam, upon whom be peace, in his own life had pardoned a Jewess who used to throw garbage on him and when she did not do so one day, the Prophet enquired about her and upon being told that she is ill, went to wish her early recovery and good health. The Prophet forgave the people of Mecca after its conquest although they had pained him, expelled him from his hometown and had waged war against him for years. We find that the attack on the Kerala lecturer is against the basic tenets of Islam and the Sunnah of the Prophet which emphasis on forgiveness. Islam explicitly forbids taking law and order into one's hands in the presence of competent authorities to deal with an issue.

We hope that law will take its due course to punish the criminals who attacked the professor. They have clearly sinned and defamed Islam by committing this crime which we condemn without reservations.

What form should retribution, if any, against this "Islamic Court" take?

If proved there would be a penalty leading to ban of this organization.
No one is above law, but the most unfortunate part is the law moves at a snails pace in India. The onus of proving lies with the complainant, and if threatened or intimidated the case may never be won. Of course unless the State or Central agencies take it upon them selves to go ahead. In this case I suppose the central agencies must have become active.

Former nun forgives men for chopping off hand - National - NZ Herald News

A former Auckland nun watched Muslim militants use an axe to cut off the right hand of her younger brother in India, but says she has forgiven the men.

"We forgive everyone," Sister Marie Stella Thenganakunnel, 59, who was based at two Auckland schools last year before going to teach in the Cook Islands, told the Asia News newsagency. "We bear no grudge or resentment."

Originally from South India, Sister Marie Stella spent time at St Mary's College, Ponsonby, and Sacred Heart College, to become familiar with the New Zealand educational curriculum, then moved to Rarotonga to teach at Nukutere College.

She went back to Kerala state in India's south on holiday in April, but her brother, Professor T J Joseph, 53, asked her to stay on. He had triggered a religious row by giving exam candidates a punctuation exercise framed as a dialogue between God and the Prophet Mohammed. The controversy led to Muslim protests, and his suspension as head of the language department at Newman College in Thodupuzha, and he was arrested by police in April and released on bail.

On Sunday morning a "gang of anti-social elements" attacked Prof Joseph, his wife, Sister Marie Stella, and their 81-year-old mother as they drove home from an early mass, The Hindu newspaper reported.

Six men pulled the teacher from his car, laid him on the road and "then one man started to chop him like firewood", one of Sister Marie Stella's fellow nuns told her New Zealand colleagues.

His hand was cut off and thrown away, and other limbs were cut while the attackers ignited firecrackers to keep passers-by at bay. Prof Joseph's mother and his wife both fainted and the nun is apparently the only eyewitness, though the attackers also tried to choke her.

The Press Trust of India newsagency reported Sister Marie Stella carried her brother's hand in a polythene bag to a hospital in Kochi, 50km away, where surgeons spent 16 hours in multiple operations stitching it back onto his arm.

She told journalists that right after the attack many Muslims expressed solidarity with her brother.

"We live in a Muslim environment," she said. "Muslims are good people. Many have donated blood for him. Unfortunately, a small fringe carried out this attack. My brother, however, has only talked about forgiveness, forgiveness and forgiveness."

Her brother was "a martyr for Islamic-Christian dialogue, in Kerala and around the world", she said.

She said he had loved his work, and prepared lessons to teach his students humanist values, encouraging rational thinking, objective assessment. He also wrote on non-violence.

Two men have so far been arrested, but police have also received death threats.

Sister Elizabeth Browne-Russell, who is with the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Cluny order in Auckland, said Sister Marie Stella spent seven months in Auckland but now found herself in a "very very horrific and sad situation".

Well good for her. But these maniacs have to be bought to justice and made examples of to deter anyone else from attempting such a stunt again.
