Originally scheduled for operation in 2013, the opening of the 1776km HSR connecting Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province, and Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region's capital city, has now been delayed into 2014 in the aftermath of the "7.23" rail accident:

These two provinces are not that populated. Only about 50 millions people there. Beijing to Guangzhou almost connect most populated provinces in China.
