Lanka won’t share her fishing sea with India

Sri Lanka yesterday rejected Indian proposals to allow fishermen from both countries to share fishing resources in each other’s seas. “There will be no compromise in allowing Indian fishermen to fish in Sri Lankan waters,” Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senaratne said.

His tough stand came ahead of next week’s Indo-Lanka talks in Colombo on the fisheries issue.
Earlier, India’s then External Affairs Ministry Secretary Nirupama Rao, now India’s ambassador in Washington, had proposed an arrangement where both Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen could fish in each other’s waters. Dr. Senaratne said Sri Lanka would insist that Indian fishermen should not enter the country’s territorial waters while Sri Lanka would ensure its fishermen did not stray into Indian waters.

Fishing in the Palk Strait, the waters that divide India and Sri Lanka, has become a contentious issue. Dividing the sea is only an International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), which the navies of both countries seek to maintain. However, fishermen from the two countries are known to end up in each other’s waters, sometime getting arrested and detained to face legal action.

Officials from the India Defence and Fisheries Ministries are due for the talks which begin in Colombo on Friday. Sri Lanka will be represented by External Affairs Ministry Secretary Karunatillake Amunugama and Fisheries Ministry Additional Secretary Shantha Bandara. Meanwhile 76 more Sri Lanka fishermen who were arrested for entering Indian territorial waters remain in custody.

However moves were underway to release 35 Sri Lankan fishermen before the joint working group meeting. A group 10 Sri Lankan fishermen who were released from custody was due to arrive in Kankesanthurai last afternoon.

Seems like Lankans have serious comprehension problem.It is not only Indians that would have got fishing rights in lankan waters but lankan fisherman would also have got fishing rights in Indian waters.Looks like rajpakasa is looking to pick up another useless fight.

Why would we do that? SriLanka is a country and it has all rights to take its own decision. If there was a proposal and they rejected it means they don't want it. Don't we reject various US request. How would you feel if US does some arm-twisting with us?

Its a defence forum that doesn't mean everything has to be with arms and ammunition. We have to learn from China, they tried arm twisting with various country and now you see how many enemies they have circling them.

We have to win SriLankan's not by arm twisting but by helping them more then Chinie's. To some issues we should take diplomatic solution. Arm twisting should only be used when our existence is in danger.

hmm, domestic consumption statement. Most people dont know how well the indian govt and SL govt have been cooperating after fall of LTTE, and, heck during it. So well abuse each other in public, but its a diff story inside.

Remember we shielded them so that some of their army folks didnt have to stand in the hague.

Relax, the best way to ensure the survival and prosperity of the SL tamils is for us to have influence to exert over each other and trading with SL and keeping colombo happy is the first step to help them realize that a stable, peaceful and happy tamil population in SL in their need as much as it is ours

Spot on, few people understand that it is that inflexible, arrogant, we know best about what you want that makes other powers in the world so unpopular.

America has the ability to project power as much as it does because it has stable and friendly neighbours.

Hmm, we are not america or russia etc yet, so lets wait till we are all the time trying to undermine chinese power projection capabilities.

Just on being a stable democracy we have the option to appeal to the masses and be more trustworthy and stable partner, we dont need to beat peace or friendship out of anyone.

We should rather sabotage them from within and not cease our 'moral' and 'diplomatic' support to the Lankan Tamils.

Srilanka has every right to accept or reject Indias proposal. Possibly this is all because of some strained relation occurred with India and Srilanka during the fierce fight between the Lankan army and the LTTE. However its time for India to take Lanka into confidence. There should be By-Lateral trade and issues between the two should be put in order. There should be some mechanism to make sure Indian fishermen not cross into Lankan territory. Also India should step up to improve trade between the two countries.

Correct. That is exactly what we don't want to show. We are a peaceful country and we don't discriminate or judge any country depending on its size.

Congratulations for your first post. Your thought's are heard. However, you missed one point. Bangladesh was part of your country which got independence with our help. Nepal's economy is dependent on us and for SriLanks we are increasing our friendship.

However, for your country India is at one side. Afghanistan is at the other, where your policies failed and it looks like your are standing alone in this region with China. No points making anybody your enemies.

These problem mainly because of short sighted decision of congress. This problems arises after v handed over our island Kachativu which v owned by TN for several centuries . Fisherman problem is solely created by congress excellency ,now begging around SL . India can't resolve this simple issue with SL then hw come it asking SC membership(with veto power) and hw it resolves world security issues. One the other hand china claiming entire south china sea and strongly protest any kind of exploration in that region. China having power as well as courage to do anything that is real Asian bully . We have power but lacking of courage that is the reality. Hats off china
