Landmark Bills on Voting passed in Pakistan NA today

.
It was already decided yesterday or day before by PDM that they will go to SC over EVM and Overseas voting.
Opposition concerns will be outrightly rejected by the SC since their most effective forum was parliament to challenge the law where they got defeated today. So SC may even dismiss their plea. However ECP plea to the SC scenario will be different. Though it will even hard for them, not to device such system after passing of the bill.

Now ECP might have to prove in the SC that this system is not achievable. Again tough to prove it when it is operationalized in many countries.

Good assessment. EVMs have some hurdles to clear, joint session bills were the first, arguably the hardest.

Timing of this bill passing is critical - 1.5yrs left to procure all the machines and setups which is sufficient time.

They cannot and probably won’t make any political decision against EVMs. They do not have any right to strike down a bill that’s passed in a joint parliamentary session. However, constitutionally speaking and based on my limited understanding, they are not obliged to use EVMs come what may, they can have pointed objections to the kind of EVM system that is delivered, they can make criticisms and request that changes be made before they are election ready. The process of implementing EVMs is complicated and it’s grossly underestimated.

Yes its not that easy to implement. I think in urban centers, half of the dedicated polling stations will be asked to have voting thru EVMs while rest of them can have thru stamping. First step has to be taken anyways. RTS got implemented as well.

Can some knowledgeable person tell us pros and cons of using EVM?
EVMs make counting easier and faster, voting time is reduced and results are extremely accurate. Rigging results become nearly impossible and hard, booth capture becomes irrelevant.
Disadvantage is that it will have higher initial cost due to electronics but in time the cost is reduced. Another disadvantage is losers in opposition will have something new to blame for losing election. EVM rigged hein. But it van be avoided by using printed strips which are then counted to confirm the EVM results(only in places where a dispute is raised).
