Some of those designs look very cheap. Typical of state-owned products. The American weapons just look so smooth and real with a lot of style. State-owned companies don't have the ability to make products with style and smoothness. They are too rugged.

Cheap weapon systems arent necessarily bad but I agree that the Chinese need to work on the aesthetics of some of their weapons, especially for export. The Sh1 artillery is especially ugly. Oh so ugly. Makes me cringe.

In military market,things work differently. Its useless to make those things nice and it still cannot work well.

Making thing look nice cost money too and unnecessary bring up the cost of its product. China military product still needs to win deal mostly based on lower cost but better operation than peer product. All this will put cosmetic appearance the last criteria.

For domestic use, it doesn't matter how it looks provided that it performs. But selling the arms to foreigners, there must be an attempt to appear modern and respectable. Seriously, how much can it cost to streamline the shape - its just panels of steel.
The SH1 looks so bad it hurts. It would be a shame it loses sales because of how it looks.

chinese and russian products are fugly, because they are mostly designed by engineers with little artistic ability.
in the west, they use industrial designers to come up with ideas and concepts, then their engineers and scientists help to make those concepts a reality using their maths and science knowledge.
chinese universities should include 1 year industrial design a compulsory in all engineering degree courses, so that students don't just only know how to crunch numbers.. lol

You are wrong on this part. Military weapon are purchased based on country relation, weapon effectiveness based on test field result. Price is also one big factor. If a minister approved a military deal based on look. He will be the biggest idiot.
