Indeed there are better ways of handling things but it is counter intuitive to handling things peacefully when you try to negotiate with a people who will stop nothing short of their demands and instead are declaring "Jihad" to attack state and instigate violence.

Yes a better way is to make him your Amir ul Momineen. Why not?
