What's new

Labha Masih becomes Judge

Never heard masih in India. Some keep their names same as hindu name(say pranab mukharjee) and some keep their surname while changing only name to 'michael' or something (like say michael mukharjee) but most of them have names like 'AK Antony' or 'george fernandes'.

Its the same here in Pakistan as well; we've got the occasional Alice, Cynthia, Johns ending in what maybe called a Muslim surname & then we've got seemingly Muslim first names ending with McDonalds, Antony, Peter etc. But we also have many who've got surnames which spell out 'Masih' !

.
Its a shame upon us, how they have to write "masih" as a name suffix. Who makes these laws?

this is not derogatory. Masih is not only Christian but also Christ. like we use the name Muhammad with ours. its not derogatory, but its our identity as Muslim. similarly the Christians like @Safriz explained adopted Masih with their names, during British Raj when the Dalits and others converted to Christianity, so to identify themselves by their faith..

however, a term "Musali" is used for those Christians who hide their identity as Christians by adopting muslim or hindu name, in a Muslim or Hindu majority area respectively, just to be on safer side. For them "Musali" term is used, which is derogatory and discriminatory..

The terms "musali" (meaning one who sits on a musala, indicating piety) and "jamadar" (corrupted form of Juma-dar, meaning one who observes Juma, indicating piety) were titles of honor in the time of Mughals. After their defeat by the British, these names were intentionally used by the colonial master to ridicule the Mughal traditions, who began calling their sweepers and cleaners these names.

Now we use them as you have described, not knowing that we make fun of our own traditions when we do that.

True...
Same goes for 'khansama'....used by colonial brits for 'chef' or cook.
Was actually a word of honour in Mughal times....

Good Luck to the man and may he prosper. Also guys nobody forces Christians to use the name "masih". Its probably a matter of pride for them to use it, just like Sikhs always put a "Singh" after the name of their male children or Muslims like using Mohammad at the start of their childrens names.

Exactly... there are so many Muslim titles that got ridiculed during British Raj. even we started calling our special kids "Khalifa" adding a negative word association..

A minority becomes a judge and suddenly its big news in pakistan. Shows how pathetic the situation is.

no actually, a slum born in india will die a slum, unlike that in Pakistan, you have a chance if you do hard work,

this boy done well,

he will now be getting 115000 salary per month, one car, police guard, a cook and a helper, depending on place of posting, he may also get a government house !!

he won this position out of more than 6000 candidates against only 136 seats.
