Saudi Arabia has expressed its deep concern over Israel's continuing assaults on East Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque and its attempts to destroy, burn and weaken the foundations of the mosque, the third holiest place of worship for Muslims.

“The Israeli occupation authorities have been continuing their abhorrent methods of displacement and expulsion of Palestinians, arbitrary detention, ill-treatment of prisoners and settlement building,” said Abdullah Al-Muallami, the Kingdom’s permanent representative to the United Nations.

Addressing the UN Security Council on Monday night, he emphasized the Kingdom’s initiative to end the Arab-Israeli conflict. He referred to the Arab peace initiative originally proposed by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah. The proposal was aimed at ending the Israeli occupation of Syrian Arab Golan Heights, the occupied Lebanese territories, and the establishment of a Palestinian state. “Although the initiative received a wide international acceptance, Israel rejected it,” he said.

He appealed to the Security Council to break the siege on Gaza, remove settlements, end occupation, and to recognize an independent Palestinian state on the territory of Palestine within the June 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital.

Speaking about the Iranian occupation of three UAE islands of Abu Musa and Greater and Lesser Tunbs, Al-Muallami said it is part of a series of threats directed by Iran against Arab Gulf countries. “The recent visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the island of Abu Musa represents an unacceptable provocation and intransigence that do not reflect good intentions,” he said, expressing the Kingdom's support for the UAE's pursuit of a peaceful resolution through negotiations or arbitration. He urged Iran to cooperate with the UAE to reach a fair solution to the island conflict.

Al-Muallami denounced the carnage being carried out by the Syrian military against its people. “Despite the issuance of Security Council Resolutions No. 2042 and No. 2043 on the deployment of international observers to monitor developments…the Syrian regime is still engaged in violence against its people, using heavy machinery, bombing residential neighborhoods, villages, and complexes of citizens,” he said. The Syrian regime is not fulfilling the commitments made to UN peace envoy Kofi Annan, he added.

The Saudi official called on the Security Council not to allow the Syrian regime to exercise its attempts of procrastination and evasion of obligations, adding that it should not grant the regime one period of time after another at the expense of Syrian lives.
