Where do all these "iron rods" come from?

There are two types of such occurrences. The first type are like the organized riots where local leaders/troublemakers (aren't they the same in South Asia?) covertly or openly organize these events. Then there are those episodes where a large number of people get "emotional" over something, like either beef or a quarrel, etc., and carry out such violence.

It would seem that atleast in the second type there is no official involvement of any kind. But that is not the truth. Notice that these spontaneous episodes of emotionalism erupting in killings always takes place only in states that support such acts. So in BJP-ruled states, most of these episodes will involve Hindu/upper caste perpetrators and Muslim/dalit victims. In Kerala or Bengal it is reversed. When Yadavs are in power in UP or Bihar then it is the lower castes or Bhumihar at the receiving end, and so on.

In other words, each such episode signals state failure. The perpetrators know fully well that they will not be brought to justice. A couple of them may be arrested here and there but that is par for the course.

If my little understanding of this text is correct then the local media is claiming that three youngsters boarded the train which the Muslim family was traveling too and one of the boys slapped the son of the Muslim man to make way in the gallery and when the elder brother of the Muslim boy protested slapping of his younger brother the attacking boy got furious and his fellows started getting physical. The boys called fellows on mobile phone who came with sticks in large numbers . The head of the Muslim family shakir out of fear locked window from inside but the attacking boys entered the bogie and beaten the family badly.

A Muslim family was brutally assaulted and robbed by a gang on board a train in Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.

The victims allegedly suffered fractures and internal injuries in the head and stomach.

The Government Railway Police have filed a case and detained three men.

Armed attack

The video of the family pleading as they were being assaulted went viral on social media. It shows about 30 young men armed with rods and sticks abusing the family and banging the coach from outside.

Later, they jump inside the train after breaking the glass on the emergency window.

According to 53-year-old Shakir, the culprits singled them out on noticing the veil-clad women on the Shikohabad-Kasgang passenger train. “We were attacked with rods. They robbed us and molested the women. They did not spare even my 17-year-old mentally challenged son,” Mr. Shakir, a resident of Kaimgang of Farrukhabad district, told presspersons. Superintendent of Police O.P. Singh said four of the family suffered head injuries, four others suffered hand fractures and all 11 had internal bleeding in the stomach.

He said a case under Section 395 of the IPC had been registered, but more sections would be added in the course of the probe.

“These people jumped inside the train, groped the women and snatched their chains,” said Mr. Shakir. “Some of the passengers who came to our rescue were attacked too.”

At the Farrukhabad station, the GRP took them to the hospital for a medical examination, he said.
