Khaleda Backs India-China Consortium for Deep Port

If the statement of KZ is true in that she approves of an joint India-China deep-sea port project then it would appear that she has received signals from both Beijing and New Delhi for this suggestion. In other words the objective is to keep the Americans out. This would also fit into her personal agenda of seeing a return of Tareque into BD politics which the US opposes. It would seem a new alliance is forming between India and China to keep the US at a distance.

Is it good or bad for BD your highness ? Would appreciate if you can shed some light on it.

Princess Shivani it is always good to keep the Americans in good humour if you do not want your country to fall apart ...... I would much prefer a Chinese-American joint consortium on the deep sea port project. The Chinese have remarked they would not be averse to any other country being involved in the project. I much prefer the Americans over the Indians. I think also other countries may be allowed to participate except India.

A $7 to $10 billion design/construction project is very large. Although people here are thinking that a Chinese participation means an automatic Chinese investment. But, this project will have to seek finance from lending agencies, US, EU and China. There will be many phases of works and there will be many separate tenders for many segments of works.

Chinese companies may do a few parts, but many other parts will have to be done by companies of other countries. Not only India and China, even US, Japanese and EU companies may try to involve themselves. Only Japan may not finally take part if its currency remains as strong as it is now. However, Pacific Consultants, a Japanese company, has done the investigation and site selection survey of this large project that took them many years to complete.

In such a large project what is the harm if Indian companies also participate in the biddings? I support all the positive BNP gestures.

A fistbump to the Chinese guys here on PDF................:enjoy:
Hopefully this is a first of many JV's to come......

China won't fully finance the project because China will be benefited very little from Sonadia. Recent developments had showed that Bangladeshis are finding it very difficult to get funds for their projects. Only other country that could take benefit from the project is India, this may be the main reason for change in the staunch anti-India position of Khaleda Zia.

pay some money to India. Will then allow the port to come up. or it will be like Gwadar reloaded :D :D

ontopic : I think half the capacity expansion or usage will be done by India if BD allows.. it is only logical to invite India !!

It is reported that the US Embassy enquired around 20 times over last the few months about the deep sea project. It is not true there is a dearth of investment for the project. This has more to do with geo-strategic issues than profits.

Can you prove any link for your claim. :woot:

It was reported in the Daily Star and Holiday some weeks ago.

Please provide the link. I am keen to see it.

Even if Sonadia come to reality it has to dependent on Myanmar for the use by other regional player, which currently sounds like a fairy tale.

Now that the ruling and opposition party visions are aligned towards the same goal, hope they will keep the political squabbles away and infra projects get going on full steam.

@Idune, a sea port is very large and it compasses a very large area. It is not that all the sections of a proposed port is directly linked. THere will be many ZIGZAGS in the port, and it will take 20 to 50 yrs to build up such a large port. However, it will start from all kinds of site surveys including aerial ones after which a tentative Master Plan will be prepared. Then will come the civil design drawings. followed by construction drawings. In between there are many other steps because it will be a giant project.

What I want to say is only one country unilaterally cannot do the project unless it is a engineering/construction giant like USA or Japan. Even USA has asked BD to allow its companies to get some construction jobs in the port. So, if an Indian company has the capability to do a part of job I do not feel threatened by that participation.

Because, this port will be built in phases (if it does) fund requirement is also not at once. It will be gradual. Therefore, I see no justification of indian involvement. Furthermore, as I had listed earlier there are more risks than benefit getting india involved in the project or even let them use it. If you want to understand sensitivity just look at Chittagong and CHT region connection through Feni corridor. India would not allow any access for Bangladesh through Chicken neck.

Heck, even US recently canceled Chinese company contract to build wind farm for reason it is in the proximity to US military installation. Here US can take on China any day.

If we do not think through just like in the past we will regret it.

But Japan should have been invited from very beginning. After all Japan was the country did the feasibility study. Japan has been a trusted friend since beginning and their technical know how is necessary.

I also do not mind limited level of US engagements just so balance can be made.
