Key Saddam deputy and top militant leader al-Douri killed in Iraq | Zee News
Last Updated: Friday, April 17, 2015 - 19:42

Baghdad: A key aide of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein has been killed, the BBC reported on Friday quoting the local media.

Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, the fugitive Iraqi militant leader and vice chairman of the erstwhile Revolutionary Command Council, was killed near the northern town of Hamreen in Irbil province, the BBC said on its website.

Al-Douri, 72, was the leader of the Naqshbandi Order, which is one of the main insurgent groups in Iraq.

The same group is believed to be the main force behind the surge of Islamic State.

Saddam Hussein was thrown out of power by the US-led forces which invaded Iraq in 2003. The Iraqi leader was executed in 2006.

Al-Douri was among the few high-profile leaders of Saddam's Baath party who had managed to evade capture following the invasion.

He also had a large bounty on his head for years.

Governor claims Saddam aide al-Douri ‘killed’ in Iraq military operation

A prominent former aide to late Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, Ezzat al-Douri, has been killed in a wide-scale military operation, Al Arabiya quoted the governor of Salahuddin province as saying. Al-Douri is also believed to have been the mastermind of the insurgency against the current Shiite-led government, Reuters said. However, a Baath party spokesman denied the reports of al-Douri’s killing, according to Al-Hadath television.

Al Douri was operating from inside Syria after the fall of Saddam Hussain and still seems most of the Baathist officials operate from Syria backed by Syrian Regime. Most of the Baathists members are in ranks of ISIS.

i know that.

plus, this from 2011 ( http://www.mathaba.net/news/arab.shtml?x=628796 )...
The Arab Socialist Baath Party (Arab Renaissance), led by former Iraqi Vice President Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, announced that they have joined Muammar Gaddafi and the Libyan Jamahiriya in the fight to liberate Libya. Iraqi resistance fighters, officers and security services have accumulated vast experience in fighting in urban and rural settings against the invaders: Americans, British and other "Georgians," as well as local collaborators

The Iraqi Liberation Front and The Ba'ath Party, as well as Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, enjoyed the financial support of Gaddafi since the invasion of Iraq by foreign imperialist invaders in 2003.

Ibrahim al-Douri said, "We have come to the tomb of Omar al-Mukhtar, in this difficult hour for his country to help his people." By speaking in this manner, Ibrahim al-Douri has acknowledged that the struggle in Libya is the struggle against colonialism--the same struggle that Omar al-Muktar confronted, and fought, for 20 years during the colonization of Libya by the Italians

The fact that General Ibrahim al-Douri was able to relocate his forces to Libya, despite having been hunted for 8 years by the imperialists, and despite having a $10 million price on his head, demonstrates his wisdom even more than his already well-known valor and skills in the art of war.

what a man !!!

backed by Syrian Regime.

the syrian government you mean. :)

Most of the Baathists members are in ranks of ISIS.

speculation.

Senior Aide to Former Iraqi President Hussein Killed in Iraq – Governor / Sputnik International

"The Iraqi security forces have managed to eliminate Izzat Ibrahim Douri during an operation in the Himrin area," Saladin Province Governor Ahmed Jubouri told local Al Sumaria television.

The channel showed pictures of the body of a red-bearded man believed to be Douri. Local police said that were conducting DNA tests to identify the body.

.
The pan-Arab television network al-Arabiya showed photos of a dead man who looked like al-Douri.
However, Khdhayer Almurshidy, a spokesman for Iraq's former Baath party, said in comments to Iraq's al-Hadathtelevision that the reports were false. Al-Douri was a senior member of the party.

Al-Jubouri told Reuters that "a group of security forces went and surrounded the area and those terrorists were killed. Three of them were suicide bombers and blew themselves up. Amongst the bodies was Douri's."

He said the operation was carried out in the Hamrin area near al Alam in Salahuddin province, but that Iraqi forces did not know al-Douri was there beforehand.

Jubouri also spoke to al-Arabiya, where he described the operation as a major victory. He said al-Douri "is considered a mastermind for this terrorist group," referring to Islamic State, an offshoot of al Qaeda which has taken swathes of Syria and Iraq.

"For sure, this will have an impact on them ... There will be a break among them," he said.

Baghdad has mounted an offensive against Islamic State and former Baathists once loyal to Saddam Hussein to retake territory in Iraq's Sunni heartland captured by jihadists last summer. Al-Douri was believed to be a key figure in that insurgency.

While Baghdad has announced al-Douri's death several times before, this time photos were circulating showing a man with similar features and red hair like al-Douri's. Al-Jubouri told Reuters that DNA from the body will be tested and results will be released to confirm it is him "very soon".

Ahmed al-Kraim, the head of Salahuddin provincial council, said news of al-Douri's death was not confirmed and intelligence officers who tracked his movements did not believe he was the man in the photographs.

Former Baathists in Iraq have also joined forces with Islamic State to fight Baghdad. Islamic State, a Sunni Muslim militant group, has seized a third of Syria and large areas of Iraq and this year proclaimed a caliphate across the two countries in the heart of the Middle East.

well, i don't know the reach of syrian government to inside iraq but izzat ibrahim al-douri is effectively the leader of the iraqi baathi command so there must be a supply line to him... as for iraqi baathis if still inside libya, let us ask our pakistani-libyan member, **** warrior...

as i was living in baniwalid

hi, i wasn't able to tag you directly so i quoted this to ask you about the thing above.

Why Syrian opposition call it Regime aka Baath Establishment ?

"regime" was first used i believe by the usa government of george bush junior to describe the iraqi government of saddam... it then became the go-to word for nato and puppet governments/media to describe any government ( generally socialist/socialistic ) that does not obey the diktats of usa government.

but a naive person like me may ask, how is the usa government a "government" and the syrian government a "regime"... how is george bush jr "mr. bush" and president saddam hussain just "saddam hussain"...

"regime" is a psychological word used and promoted by western governments to instil hatred and fear in the minds of ordinary peoples of the world, against any leader or government disliked by usa government... the art of brain-washing sees masterful practice by western governments and their reactionary puppets.

the "syrian opposition" ( fsa, nusra, qaeda, taliban, ikhwaan, jemah ) collectively called the snc ( syrian national council ) uses "regime" because they cannot stop themselves from using of their masters in white house, no. 10 downing street and whatever palace the saudi king lives.

Its like denying the fact.

well, there has been no statement from the iraqi baathis accepting or denying the supposed former-baathi membership of isis.

let them release the result... besides, best that the dna tests be done by a international team.

the present iraqi government is basically a puppet occupation government, working on behalf of the iran mullahs and western governments.

Still its not confirmed and the body have sent for DNA tests according to the article.

Iraqi Baath leadership members are still operating from Syria.

sorry but that is speculation... there has been no statement from the iraqi baathis accepting or denying the supposed former-baathi membership of isis... nor has there been any russian government statement.

in fact, what is isis?? :what:

Baath party was established in Syria and from there only it spread all over the Arab world. Michel Aflaq was one of the early founder of Baathism. After the fall of Iraq Baath Party, Iraqi Baathists were operating from inside Iraq and if i remember correctly . US helicopter gunship once crossed into Syrian border towns to hit Al Qaida/Baathist operatives.

I think regime was the term used during the Cold war for the Governments allied with USSR during the cold war. Even Eastern Germany was termed as Regime before the fall of Berlin wall.

well, there has been no statement from the iraqi baathis accepting or denying the supposed former-baathi membership of isis.

In reality, Iraq Baath leadership is being keep low profile since many years. Most of the attacks are being credited either to Al Qaida or ISIS.

DNA test will be done by Iraqi experts.

Iraqi central government right now is having upper hand because the Baath leadership and its International supporters are more interested in keeping Syria under thier control.
