Key Iranian extremist group commander arrested in Pakistan

A key commander of a banned Iranian sectarian extremist group was arrested by security forces in Pakistan's restive Balochistan province, officials said today.

Jundullah commander Abdul Salam Rigi was arrested near provincial capital Quetta, the officials said.

"He was arrested during a security check near the Lok Pas area on the outskirts of Quetta on Sunday morning," said an official.

Rigi was held when he was coming from the Iranian town of Taftan to Quetta on a bus, he said adding that the militant commander has been taken to an undisclosed place for questioning.

Rigi was the senior most commander of Jundullah after the capture and subsequent execution of the group's former chief Abdul Malek Rigi by the Iranian government in 2010.

Jundullah, which is based in Iran's southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, has in the past claimed several attacks on Shia Hazara Muslims, government installations and security forces in the volatile Balochistan province.

The official said Rigi is suspected of carrying out bomb attacks in Pakistan and Iran.

Balochistan Home Secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani confirmed the arrest of a "suspect" but did not say he was Abdul Salam Rigi.

"I can only say he is in custody of security forces and has been taken for questioning," said Durrani.

This might sound strange coming from a sunni but I have some sympathy for the Sipah E Muhammed. Its a fanatical shia group but its what you get when you push someone to the wall. Zia Ul Haq with Saudi support gave support to the LEJ and in 1980's the first bombings of shia mosques began. Do note that despite the almost daily murder of shias Sipah E Muhammed has never targetted innocent sunnis. Almost none of their attackers have ever targeted random civilians like the Lashkar E Jhangvi which has killed 13000 Hazaras and many more shias. So go ahead blame Iran for a problem that is very much local.

More worrying however is how every terrorist group finds sanctuary in Pakistan. . Jundullah-Iranian, Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan-Uzbekistan (Do you know how far Uzbekistan is from Pakistan? it doesn't even share a border with Pakistan)

No wonder Iranians and Afghans launch border raids that at times result in civilian casualties. It should'nt happen but what do you expect when we have zero progress against extremists attacking our nation.

You must have been devastated, when the Iranians hanged the leader Abdullah Malik. Those Iranians have the habit of hanging terrorist and not just letting then escape from jails to strike again, I agree with you they can't be trusted with Saudi strategic weapons and must be kept in pakistan for safe keeping.

You seem to be forgetting the fact that military courts now exist. He'll be hanged alright, whether he's given to Iran or not. Though I'd prefer it if he's handed over to Iran if they want to hang him themselves.

Why are you giving a terrorist away?? Iran, India and Afgahnistan are the three main reasons your country's on fire, specially the constant violence in Baluchistan (bordering Iran, hint, hint). Through that border, Iran provides access to Indian agents as well as its own agencies and to the Afghan terrorists as well.

Terrorists don't deserve to be handed over to people or places who'll release them and /or hide them. Give this basta*rd a straight flight to hell, like what we gave to OBL. End of story, no fuss, lesson provided by your justice system, and learned by the other side for the future.
Taking out terrorists should be a reward-able act and compensation should be provided to security personnel who put their lives in danger and find these terrorist scumbags!
