The Kel-Tec RFB (Rifle, Forward-ejecting Bullpup) was developed by George Kellgren. Previously George Kellgren was involved in development of various advanced bullpup rifles, notably Interdynamics MKR and SUB-16. The SUB-16 had an unusual forward extraction of spent cases and was used as a starting point for the RFB. Development of this semi-automatic rifle commenced in 2005. It was an attempt to develop a sniper rifle, that would be well suited for right- and left-handed shooters. Initially this weapon was knows as SRT-8, however in 2006 it was renamed to RFB. Production of this semi-automatic rifle commenced in 2008. It looks that as of 2017 this weapon was not adopted by any military user. Though it is popular with civilian customers.

The Kel-Tec RFB is a gas-operated weapon with a bullpup layout. It is chambered for a standard NATO 7.62x51 mm ammunition. The gas system is fitted with manual gas regulator. This rifle comes with a 460 mm (18") barrel. This weapon is also proposed with a longer 610 mm (24") barrel. Initially it was also available with an 812 mm (32") barrel, however this version has been discontinued. This weapon is relatively light for its caliber.

An ambidextrous safety switch is located over the pistol grip. The cocking handle is also ambidextrous. It can be installed on either side of the weapon. Also this weapon is well balanced.

This rifle uses a patented ejection system which makes this weapon truly ambidextrous. Developers claim that the RFB was the first truly ambidextrous 7.62 NATO bullpup ever developed. Spent cases are fend into an ejection chute above the barrel and out a forward port. Spent cases are ejected forwards over the handguard of the rifle.

The Kel-Tec RFB can be disassembled without using any tools, other than a bullet or other pointed object to push-out the connecting pins.

This weapon uses common FN FAL-type 20-round capacity magazines. There are also 10-round capacity magazines for this weapon.

This rifle has a Picatinny-type scope rail for various optics. This weapon is delivered without iron sights. Though flip-up iron sights can be easily installed. Range of effective fire is 500-600 meters.

This weapon has a threaded barrel and can mount a sound suppressor.



Variants



Kel-Tec RDB is a similar bullpup rifle, chambered in standard NATO 5.56x45 mm and Soviet 7.62x39 mm ammunition. This weapon is lighter and more compact. It was released in 2014.
