Srinagar: Sending strong signals of post-poll alliance with Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), former separatist leader and Chairman People’s Conference (PC) Sajjad Lone has said that for Kashmir the BJP was a better option for alliance than Congress.
Once the strong critic of BJP, Lone has of late expressing a feeling of closeness towards the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“As far as BJP, as an institutions goes, yes there is correlation between Vajapayee days and Achay Din feeling. As far as Modi is concerned, people feel he is a man of ideas. He probably will do lot of development work,” he said.
“Like in the floods he had courtesy of coming to Kashmir, flying in plane, having the look at flood hit areas of Kashmir and saying that his government will do lot for the rehabilitation of Kashmiris. At times it’s not what you do it; it’s how you do it. I think Modi knows how to do things, he is smart. So like in rest of the India, Kashmiris too feel same way, “Lone said.
He said that Rahul Gandhi was too liked by the people of Kashmir but now the focus has changed towards BJP or probably Modi.
But in politics everything is temporary. As on date I would say that from development point of view there is a section out here who want centre to invest. There is no international aide coming and the only place where from you get money is centre. They are ruling India and people of Kashmir have hope that Modi will come and help them out,” PC Chairman said.
Calling Congress author of all the constitutional erosions, Sajad Lone said, “If BJP’s is talking about abrogation of Article 370, but when you talk of Congress, they are the author of all the constitutional erosions so far. So what is the difference?” and added that BJP at least was honest about its stand which the Congress never was.
He further said that he swears by Article 370 and there should be no dilution. “But when you make distinction, it is very important to put things in proper perspective. If you talk about Article 370 what about constitutional erosions so far,” Lone said. Talking about his meeting with RSS leader and BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav in Srinagar, Sajjad said that he used to meet BJP leaders even when he was in separatist camp. “The very courtesy the BJP leaders have always shown towards me is at least socially acknowledgeable. Whether on some TV shows or some private parties, It is not all of sudden I have found them or they have found me,” Lone said.
When asked how ideological foes are coming together and looking for electoral understanding, Lone said, “To be honest, when it comes to Jammu and Kashmir, there are two national parties Congress and BJP. And in the context of Kashmir they are not distinctive they have more of a national policy.”
Openly calling Congress the friend of Abdullah’s, Sajjad said that if another national party comes and shows respect, the least we can do is replicate that respect. “Rahul Gandhi came to Kashmir some two years back amid rousing reception in the University. And the speech he made, the net substance was that the Omar Abdullah is my friend. Congress in six decades has confined itselfs to the Muftis and Abdullahs. For them they have two managers that manage the Kashmiris best,” said Lone.
“I have been in politics for 12 years. No Congress leader ever sought or talk to me,” Sajjad Lone.
Commenting about the BJP’s Mission 44+, Sajad said, “Before elections everybody has to make tall claims, nobody is going to tell we will get less than 44. It is only somebody like me who wants to enter Assembly elections with a group of people. PDP, NC will say they will get 44 or 45. But when you will come to boycott and low voting turnout I think it is very important to say that both PDP and NC are great beneficiaries of boycott even today.”
“In south of Kashmir if you get 5000-6000 votes you win and in north Kashmir you get 20,000 you lose. In Srinagar you can win by even 1500 votes,” Sajjad Lone said.
