How pathetic that government is requesting these terrorists "Please leave Karachi" or it could be sign of alarm or secret message to favorite terrorists of PPP government or MQM favorites that now time has come to escape/underground.

BTW i appreciate news writer, What a style of writting. Shame on government.

Who will rescue Karachi?

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani sat with the Sindh cabinet on August 22 and decided to launch ‘surgical operations’ against the target-killers of Karachi. The term ‘surgical operations’ has over time become such a platitude that no one cared about the wording and two gentlemen present — Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik and senior Sindh Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza — reportedly exchanged insults to show they didn’t really believe the said ‘surgical operations’ would lead to anything.
The MQM, far from joining the cabinet, which some reports would have us believe as recently as over the weekend, is on the warpath again, half-complaining, half-threatening while plainly accusing the PPP and “some of its ministers” of patronising the killers behind the deaths of recent days and taking bhatta. When it called for a ‘day of mourning’, in effect a strike, the city obeyed, something which should open President Zardari’s eyes to the situation on the ground. Perhaps his first reaction should be to ensure that Dr Mirza takes a back seat since every time he speaks his mind, the situation gets from bad to worse.
Our leaders should also avoid saying things like: “We need to take action now; otherwise it will be too late and someone else would come to do the job.” Such statements anger an already angry and frustrated citizenry further and do nothing other than lowering the government’s already-low credibility with the public. The fact is that it is already very late and action should have come much sooner. This was made clear by the MQM who reportedly refused to see the prime minister during his visit to Karachi. In turn, when he failed to see a delegation of industrialists and businessmen who thought they could suggest alternatives to his many failures in Karachi, he failed to realise the fact that the businessmen are the real party in Karachi; the others are simply exploiters and hangers-on.
The ANP, too, is angry with the PPP and did not attend the meeting. It was enraged by the unholy despatch with which the commissionerate system it favoured was scrapped. It wants the army to be called in to restore peace to Karachi. If one was to judge the prime minister’s visit, it would be fair to say that almost no one was pleased with his presence. Should this mean that the prime minister should stop his meaningless routine and let President Zardari handle the situation directly? Perhaps, MQM chief Altaf Hussain’s statement on August 22 demanding that he step down should be seen in this context.
Anybody looking in from the outside would favour the restoration of the local bodies in Karachi because it was during the phase when they were in place that Karachi became known to the outside world for its urban governance, not only under the MQM but also under the Jamaat-e-Islami. But President Zardari was made to taste the bitter medicine of partisan politics when his own party sulked after his go-ahead to the local bodies elections; and the Sindhi nationalists thought it was time to attack him from the rear. The PPP-voter thinks like the nationalists but votes for the PPP.
Now the businessmen have despaired of the stakeholders, seeing them as target-killers and ‘bhatta’-takers, and want the Sindh government to call in the army. They have no way to defend themselves and their assets against the savages who kill one another, financed by extortions that are rapidly emptying Karachi of its investments, which is losing billions every day, because of strikes and shutdowns caused by the seemingly never-ending violence. Alas, the army simply cannot handle today’s Karachi with all the stakeholders armed with lethal weapons and given that the political parties need to step up and take charge of the situation and own up to the responsibility that the solution to the problem must come from them.
One clear option, and which should have been tried many weeks ago when the death toll was decidedly lower, would be to give a free hand to the police and the paramilitary forces to strike at the culprits without discrimination. This should be supplemented by a comprehensive in-house weeding process by all political parties so that their ranks and cadres are purged of all elements involved in acts of violence and/or target killings.

bari ajeb EID ki khareedari hy tere shehar karachi me SAHIL
Log ro ro k kafan kharid rahe han apny jaan nasheeno k liye

Ya ALLAH hum par aur hamare mulk par rahem farma AMEEN !!
Thank you Sir. Talking of the usual (not the kafan one) khariidaari of Eid, reportedly the markets have been empty of shoppers since at least some days. That's very unusual given the time of the year, and speaks of the gravity of the situation.

In the spirit of keeping their children as apolitical and uninvolved as possible, my family doesn't tell me what goes on around them so if I hadn't asked I'd never had got this info out of them:- A few days ago my mum's vehicle was stopped by armed bandits near the infamous Mausamiyaat Chowrangy but let go, probably because shooting at two middle aged women is more scandalous than useful. Closer to home, at least five people have been found dead or heard being shot during these weeks, and we're talking about Tariq Road, not some gang-infested or one-party-held neighborhood! One of them was shot while offering Salaat in a local masjid, and one made to run the length of a street and shot at its end. None was a native of the block, maybe they were all gang personnel, but still it is a very intimidating experience hearing gunshots and then hearing a dead man has been found on a street corner or in the masjid.

If the MQM and PPP want to shoot at each other, by all means go ahead, please just spare the unarmed and frankly uninterested-in-your-power-games civilians.

Nor i need identities nor i don't want to get involved into anyone's personnal matters, i'm just a common Pakistani & want peace in whole Pakistan, because mqm did many good developments in Karachi so i support them above all PPP PML ANP thug parties but i support APML & PTI more than mqm so how can you call me even mqm member? I'm supporter of any saviour of Pakistan.

Ok playing the good boy bad boy game..even Altaf bhai becomes Sindhi and Baluchi at times during his sermons..i can understand that..must be a party thing...when confronted..play friends with the larger crowd..thats how MQM manages to be part of every government while continuing to raise slogans against everyone..

A person subconciousness exposes their mindset. America is a nation build on immigrants so it is not rare to reference a person by his country of origin followed by his citizenship. SO you can be Mexican-American, African-American, Pakistani or Indian - American, but just what the hell is American-Pakistani??? Altaf bhai "mohajir" mindset working well for you..Sab se last me Pakistan!

Rangers get a free hand as strike paralyses Karachi

PPP rules out army deployment in violence-stricken city as eight more people were killed in last 24 hours; Sindh govt tells extortionists ‘to leave city or face action’

KARACHI - Rangers personnel besieged Lyari for an imminent operation late on Tuesday after the Sindh government gave them all police powers except the authority to register first information reports (FIRs), as the city ground to a halt following a complete shutter-down and wheel-jam strike on a mourning day call from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).

In a high-level meeting at Chief Minister’s House chaired by Interior Minister Rehman Malik and Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah earlier in the day, the government decided to offer extortionists the choice to leave the city or face action, and also decided to act against some 25 banned extremist outfits.

A notification issued later at night, however, warned extortionists to cease their activities or face action. The government also decided to give Rangers all police powers except the authority to register FIRs. Rangers will now be able to carry out operations anywhere and at any time, and are set to begin surgical operations in the city to root out criminals.

The only beneficiaries of the day were rickshaw and taxi drivers, who overcharged desperate customers in the absence of public transport. Fruit and vegetable markets in the city were also closed because of suspension of supply from the main market. Traders incurred over Rs 2 billion in losses, sources said, and labourers who rely on daily wages also suffered.

NO NEED FOR THE ARMY: The meeting also decided not to call in the army to Karachi and maintained that police and Rangers could handle the situation. According to an official handout, the meeting reviewed the efforts to maintain law and order, protect the lives and properties of people, and initiate effective action against criminals, terrorists and enemies of the people. The meeting issued a warning to banned organisations such as Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Sipah-e-Sahaba to immediately stop their activities.

Traders have hired some 650 armed private guards to deal with extortionists, it is learnt. Usually the markets of the city remain open late into the night as Eid draws nearer, but this year things were different as customers and businessmen alike feared for their lives. Traders of the old city areas told Pakistan Today that the law enforcement agencies had failed to provide adequate security to them.

All markets of Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Digri, Jhuddo, Samaro, Tando Adam, Sanghar, Shehdadpur, Tando Allahyar and other parts of lower Sindh remained closed and traffic was non-existent between Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad and Karachi.

KARACHI:
Despite a complete strike in Karachi for the Yaum-e-Soag announced by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, violence continued in the city as police and Rangers claimed to have arrested 11 suspected target killers.
Six more people were killed on Tuesday, raising the total death toll to 111 from eight days of unabated violence in Karachi.
‘Target killers’ arrested
SSP Central Asim Qaimkhani and SSP South Naeem Sheikh presented four men at a press conference who, they said, were members of the ‘slaughtering squad’ of a criminal gang. They said that men had confessed to abducting and killing over a dozen people after sexually assaulting them. They also said that they are now looking for a prime suspect, who they believe is the chief of the ‘beheading squad’.
Qaimkhani and Sheikh said that the men were arrested late on Tuesday night after a police encounter in North Nazimabad. Police identified the suspects as Shahnawaz Baloch, Rafiq, Mustafa Baloch and Naeem Jan.
The suspects, police said, have also confessed to being involved in 13 cases of murder, attempt to murder and abduction. Police have recovered weapons and drugs from their possession.
According to SHO Anzar Alam, the men belong to Lyari’s Akram Baloch group, which is being run by Akram’s nephews Sameer and Afzal and is a rival of the now defunct Peoples Amn Committee.
“The men have admitted that they had killed members from rival gangs after kidnapping them from Lyari and surrounding areas,” Alam said. The men, he said, were wanted by Kalakot, Napier, Chakiwara and Risala police and are currently in custody of Kalakot police.
Alam said that in all 13 cases, the men abducted the victims, killed them and stuffed their slaughtered bodies into gunny bags. “Shahnawaz and Rafiq sexually abused the abductees, while Sameer beheaded them after injecting drugs into his body,” he said.
Other members of the gang kidnapped people and made videos while they were being tortured. These videos, Alam said, were found from the mobile phones of the arrested men. In another raid, alleged target killer Ejaz Chohto was arrested from Tipu Sultan Road under the jurisdiction of Baldia Police Station. SHO Haq Nawaz said the arrested accused is a political worker and was involved in nearly 50 cases of heinous crimes, including target killings.
Meanwhile, Saeedabad police also claimed that it had apprehended a target killer, identified as Abul Ghaffar, said to be affiliated with the MQM.
During interrogation, Ghaffar told police that he had kidnapped Yasir from a market in Saeedabad and handed the hostage over to Aziz alias CIA, Imran and Yusuf, who also belonged to the MQM. Half an hour later, they killed Yasir and dumped his body in Rang Gaar area of Saeedabad.
During separate raids in Gulberg and Ferozabad, five more suspected target killers were arrested, sources within Sindh Rangers confirmed. Four of the suspects were arrested from Gulberg but their identities could not be ascertained.
Another suspect was arrested on Tariq Road while trying to escape after attacking a man named Saadullah.

Violence
Meanwhile, there was no respite in the continuous killing spree in Karachi as three bodies were found from separate areas in the city while two more people were gunned down on Tuesday.
Two bodies were found separately within the jurisdiction of Pak Colony Police Station. Both bodies bore torture marks and bullet wounds in the head. Their hands and legs were tied with ropes.
A body stuffed in a gunny bag was found from Qasba Colony in Orangi Town. A note, saying ‘[do you] want peace or war?’, was found with the body, police said, adding that the man was strangled to death.
Two people, identified as Faisal and Bahadur Ali, were shot dead in separate incidents of target killing in Malir City and Shah Latif, respectively.
An activist of a Sindhi nationalist party Allah Jatoi was gunned down in Bilal Colony in Korangi. DSP Fakhrul Islam said Jatoi, associated with Sindh Dost Ittehad, was shot outside his home by armed men riding motorcycles.

In my view, PPP govt wants to be siasi shaheed. It is getting out of their nerves that Army has not interfered so far. So whatever they are doing is the plan that the army takes over so they should cry in next elections...
