Karachi burning

The latest bout of violence in Karachi would make even the most optimistic amongst us think that the city has been lost amid sea of blood. Murdered men are showing up in gunny bags and life in the city has ground to a complete halt. The numbers don’t lie. In the last three days over 50 people have been killed, while more than 300 people were murdered in the month of July. To blame the violence on gangs, as most politicians have done, would be far too simplistic. Certainly, criminal gangs have been involved but it is a well-established fact that in Karachi every powerful gang has an even more powerful political party providing it muscle, weaponry and protection. Were this simply a case of gang violence, the law-enforcement authorities would not have speedily melted away.
The nature of Karachi’s politics dictates that political violence invariably takes an ethnic tinge. The issue of how Karachi will be governed, whether under the commissionerate system or by a nazim, should be a simple administrative matter. The Pakthun population of Karachi, under the rubric of the ANP, is now aggrieved that the PPP has given in to the MQM’s demands and restored the local government system. The PPP has not helped matters by constantly vacillating, and thus managing to alienate both its allies. The solution to stemming the violence is both simple and yet impossible to achieve. The three main political parties in Karachi — the MQM, the ANP and the PPP — need to put their grievances aside for the sake of the city. This is easier said than done.
The sad truth is that violence is just another bargaining chip in Karachi’s power politics. Other solutions that have been suggested are likely to beget further violence. Bringing in the army or giving shoot-to-kill order to paramilitary forces, as we learned in the 1990s, will only deepen the anger and hate. The answer lies not with the men in khaki but with the civilians who were elected to keep the city safe.

I've lived in Karachi from 87-88 when my father was posted there for the Air War College (AWC)

And yet we used to hear there is curfew in certain parts of Karachi.

Unknown to many Pakistani, with the advent of mqm in 1984 this all started in 86 when they organized everything, before 86 there was nothing as such violence in Sindh.

do you know Z.A. Bhutto ? ever heard of massacre in Lahore? ever heard of militia called Al zulfikar ? kindly do start history from a relevant point, or contextualize it properly... if MQM initiated violence in Karachi, they were not the ones who introduced violence in politics... it was in retaliation to discrimination, humiliation and violence against them... guess by whom ? ever head of Z.A. Bhutto?

Exactly Airforce bhaijaan, thanks for calling a spade a spade.

Bhutto did not do anything against Mohajirs..he merely distilled out the economic oppurtunitst who illegaly immigrated and amased jobs. MQM and Zia are two main culprits to blame Karachi situation today. MQM only cares about themselves so they dont care taking Karachi down with them just to maintain their mandate. MQM by any means is not in national intrest of Pakistan. Pakistanis should beging with petitioning the UK government for extradiction of Altaf and his trial in anti-terrorism court.

Back in the day, when Jamat dominated Karachi affiars there were no ethinic of political riots. However since the advent of MQM hate politics , Karachi has become really fragmented. I would call for a complete operation clean sweep in Karachi and resident reidenfication. Those whose forefathers came as illegal immigrats without domicile should have their NADRA cards suspended and given "person non grata status". We should keep them like their counter parts in Bangladesh today.

Sorry, no bigotry but this is the hardcore truth of refugee mentality people. Keep them in concentration camps and they will remain tame, give them a helping hand and they will bite your arm. History has again and again proven this. Palestinenan refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Tunisia enaged in similar activities until their social status was downgraded and pushed into concentration camps.

if he were put on trial or even a scratch on his face, his worshippers would burn the entire city down.....so perhaps we should just allow him to remain in UK (as he wishes).

it's odd that someone shows emotion and claims to represent Pakistan, but does it through a wireless internet connection and a web camera.....

ajeeb baat hai :meeting:

Six cops among 9 perish amid Korangi ambush

KARACHI: At least nine persons, six policemen among them, have been killed in militants-police gun battle in Chakra Goath of Korangi locality of metropolis on late Friday, SAMAA reported.

According to details, suspected gunmen opened fire at a coach with passengers on board including policemen, which prompted cops to retaliate. Resultantly, six policemen died on the spot among 9 people.

Taking the advantage of darkness, miscreants succeeded to flee the scene of ambush.

Subsequently, Federal Interior Minister Abdul Rehman Malik, talking to SAMAA, reacted aggressively to the incident and ended up in hinting at deployment of army in Karachi to ensure peace, if the violence and target killings continue to batter the port city.

Meanwhile, the death tally from the fresh spate of ongoing bloodshed across Karachi has risen to record high as 29 more innocent Karachiites have been gunned down within last 24 hours, hospital sources confirmed to this office.

Reports of indiscriminate firing with short intervals and persistence of tense situation in the area, witnessed massacre of police personnel, have continued to emerge till this hour.

Earlier, unidentified outlaws set on fire an office of a political party in Korangi , which sparked panic and tension in the locality.

Moreover, a man identified as Aslam was gunned down and another five injured amid gun attacks at funeral gathering in Korangi number 1.

Passenger coach abducted near Sohrab Goath

sendbinary.aspx

KARACHI: Several passengers, sitting on a bus which runs on W11 route, have been abducted at gunpoint near Edhi morgue abating to Sohrab Goath area in Karachi a few minutes ago, SAMAA reported late Friday.

According to details, a passenger coach, carrying passengers to New Karachi, was intercepted by armed militants near a turn at Edhi morgue adjacent to Sohrab Goath area of New Karachi while all the passengers excluding women and children have been taken under hostage at gunpoint.

The ill-fated coach has been transported to unidentified location with kidnapped passengers on board.

The adduction took place shortly after Friday midnight.

It is pertinent to mention here that the menace of kidnapping at gunpoint is alarmingly on rise in Karachi for many days.

Besides, the reports citing recovery of mutilated cops of missing persons, packed in sacks, have also been making headlines in media for a number of days in this port city

These political parties need to be banned, MQM, ANP, PPP, the Supreme Court isn't doing it's job. They are suppose to a level of protection to keep a check on the executive Government to make sure they do things within constitutional limits. Personally, I think MQM, PPP, ANP parties need to be shut down, investigated, their leaders trialed and imprisoned if found guilty, etc.

Those Pakistani people who continue to vote for these parties are also part of the problem, they too are partaking in the country's destruction, although inadvertently.

JI may also need to be investigated, but these three main parties have to be brought to justice.

What is bothersome is the Pakistani awam has failed to rise up and end the Zardari Government and put him and his cabinet on trial in SC. In Egypt recently they had the most powerful man in Egypt for the past 30 years. former Pres. Mubarak on trial at the nation's supreme court, with the former President lying down pale inside a cage.

‘Army may be deployed in Karachi’

KARACHI: Federal Interior Minister Abdul Rehman Malik, following the incident of ambush at policemen in Korangi, resulting in demise of six cops, has nodded his head for deployment of army in Karachi, saying, “Karachi may be given under authority of army to ensure peace and stability in case the ongoing spree of violence and target killings continue to plague the city, SAMAA reported late Friday.

“I will prolong my stay in Karachi unless peace situation in the port city returns to normalcy,” he claimed.

The minister was talking to SAMAA. He said the government was all poised to take stern action against miscreants at all levels to flourish peace and harmony in metropolis.

“Terrorists’ days have been numbered in Karachi,” the minister threatened, adding that the security forces would unearth criminals even if they go in hiding.

Those who ambushed police personnel in Chakra Goath of Korangi have been identified and would be captured soon, he claimed.

I don't know why many in Pakistani society are behaving so self-destructively, Pakistan is long over due for a purge at the high levels of office to the rank and file. Supreme Court has to take legal action, otherwise the Supreme Court Justice should be sacked and forced to resign, those pesky lawyers fought for his restoration during Musharraf's era as if he were a man to fight for.

While at it, Police have to physically force out all undocumented refugees from the city, they have no purpose or legal right to remain inside KHI or PK for that matter.

the authorities and govt. have failed to establish law & order in the underdeveloped areas of Karachi where this needless violence takes place on the hour, every hour.....

who are the people that are getting killed everyday in this mindless violence? ANP's or MQM's workers or innocent Urdu or Pushto speakers? I can't believe our nation has become so racist they are killing each other by scores only for belonging to a different ethnicity.

Lahore has many ethnic groups --maybe not as much as Karachi -- but still much diversity in Lahore that once can see. Even in Peshawar there is no problem with people of other parts of Pakistan coming in for business or for other reasons.....

so this is a Pakistani problem because Karachi is part of Pakistan.....but it is only in Karachi where political parties are literally being run like mafias; land-grabbers; dacoits; extortion; drugs and gang warfare is taking place on such large scale.

there are 2 sides to Karachi; the clean, spotless posh areas; and then theres the dark side. Nobody is doing anything to uplift those troubled areas........

it's amazing to me; in any other country --curfew would be imposed. Police presence would be given special orders to combat anybody carrying even a knife or anybody destroying public property......

these attacks go on and then the guys slip away in the darkness of night....people have either become de-sensitized or people are just not taking enough action.

there should be massive protests and hell being raised over this violence!!!!!!! How is this acceptable to anybody?
