Two officials of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s (KMC) fire brigade department were shot dead while a third was critically injured in Korangi in early hours of Saturday.

East Zone Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Muquddus Haider said that a pair of suspects riding a motorbike arrived at the fire brigade office around 2am, woke up four of the employees and began firing at them. As a result, he said, three KMC officials sustained bullet injuries while the fourth managed to escape.

DIG Haider said the suspects had helmets on, did not remove them during the incident and fled the scene.

The DIG said the injured were transferred to Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre where doctors pronounced two of them dead on arrival while the third was admitted for treatment.

DIG Haider said the police were probing the incident from every possible angle and investigators had invoked terror charges in the first information report.

A statement from the Awami Colony police spokesperson said that Amir, 55, and Mehboob, 35, were gunned down. At the same time, Irshad Rehmatullah, 30, was injured by the firing of two unknown suspects inside the Fire Brigade office at Korangi’s Bilal Chowrangi.

Meanwhile, Korangi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Faisal Bashir Memon said the police were not ruling out the possibility of terrorism behind the incident for two reasons.

Memon said the suspects had asked the employees to form a line and recite Kalima before opening fire. He added that two of the four officials died on the spot while the other two attempted to flee. The suspects opened fire on the fleeing officials from behind, resulting in injuries to one while the other escaped unhurt.

SSP Memon said the police had also sought the help of the Counter-Terrorism Department to probe possible elements of terrorism behind the incident. He said all victims were firemen, who were there to respond to any emergency or fire incident in the area.

Meanwhile, speaking at a press conference, Karachi Administrator Barrister Murtaza Wahab addressed the incident and said the injured employee was moved to an intensive care unit.

“The incident is being probed,” Wahab said. He termed the incident a “terror attack” and vowed to bring the culprits to justice.

The Sindh Police’s Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) on Friday claimed to have arrested a suspected terrorist allegedly involved in the killing of a man of Chinese origin in Karachi’s Saddar area on Sep 28.

On September 28, a young man, identified as Ronald Raymond Chou, was shot dead while a dentist couple of Chinese origin — Dr Richard Hu and his wife Phen Teyin — were critically wounded when a masked man posing as a patient entered their clinic in the busy commercial area of Saddar and opened indiscriminate fire at them.

A day after the attack, the police registered a case against the outlawed Sindhudesh People’s Army, said to be a coalition of Sindhi and Baloch separatist outfits.

According to a CTD statement issued today, the suspect is associated with the Sindh People’s Army, an offshoot of the outlawed Sindh Revolutionary Army (SRA), and was arrested in a targeted operation carried out with the help of “sensitive agencies”.

The statement, however, did not name the place where the operation was conducted.

In its statement today, the CTD said it thoroughly examined the footprint of the terrorists with the assistance of intelligence officials and analysed the footage of closed-circuit TV cameras installed at the crime scene.

“In the latest development, CTD team managed to the trace terrorist, identified as Waqar Khushik, with the help of advanced technology and informants and subsequently arrested him,” the statement added.

The CTD also claimed to have recovered the motorcycle used in the crime.

It said the suspect was assigned the task by a man named Zulfikar Khaskheli, adding that the teams had been constituted to apprehend accomplices of the suspect.

The arrested suspect is currently being interrogated while investigators are collecting relevant information about him from different police stations, the statement said.

The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of Sindh police claimed on Thursday to have arrested a suspected terrorist who allegedly intended to kill a Chinese doctor in Hyderabad and was associated with the perpetrators of a similar attack on Chinese dentists in Karachi in September.

A statement by the CTD spokesperson, the department’s personnel and a federal intelligence agency conducted an operation in Karachi’s Gulistan-i-Jauhar after receiving information about the suspect’s presence in the area.

They subsequently arrested a member of banned Sindh Revolutionary Army (SRA), identified as Afzal Lund alias Aafi, the statement said, adding that a 30-bore unlicensed pistol along with a 5-round magazine and a motorcycle were seized from his possession.

Two TTP militants jailed for life in Landhi blast case

November 17, 2022

KARACHI: An antiterrorism court on Wednesday handed down life imprisonment to two militants of the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on charges of carrying out an improvised explosive device (IED) blast near a Rangers office in Landhi.

Inamullah alias Mulla and Muhammad Shafiq were found guilty of killing two persons and wounding eight passers-by in the Khurramabad area on March 11, 2013 by detonating the IED.

They have already been sentenced to death by a military court in 2013 for carrying out the Abbas Town bomb blast.

On Wednesday, the ATC-V judge, who conducted the trial in the judicial complex inside the central prison, pronounced his verdict reserved after recording evidence and final arguments from both sides.

The judge noted that the prosecution proved its case against the accused beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Besides life term, the court ordered the convicts to pay Rs200,000 as compensation to the legal heirs of the victims.

The judge also sentenced them to total 20-year-imprisonment for causing injuries to eight people and terrorism.

However, the court ruled that all the sentences would run concurrently.

The court kept the case against two absconding accused — Fareedullah alias Fareed and Zahidullah alias Zahid — on dormant file until their arrest or surrender.

In the verdict, the judge wrote that some mitigating circumstances did exist in this case, for which the accused could not be handed down capital punishment of death.

It stated that at the time of the commissioning of the offence as per the prosecution evidence and material available on record, both the accused were accompanied by their accomplices Zahid and Fareed, who had a remote control in their hands which the prosecution failed to recover from their possession. Therefore, the capital punishment cannot be given to them, the court ruled.

According to the prosecution, a CTD investigating officer on March 18, 2013 interrogated Inamullah and Muhammad Shafiq, who were already in custody in connection with two other bomb blast cases. They disclosed to their involvement in the Rangers headquarters blast, it added.
