KADDB, South Africas Paramount to manufacture armoured vehicles

Monday, February 7th, 2011, 3:25 am Amman Time

AMMAN - The Kingdom will start manufacturing mine-protected armoured vehicles this year under a $40 million project between the country and South Africa.

Under an agreement, announced Thursday, between King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB) and the Paramount Group of South Africa, a facility was established in KADDBs free industrial zone for the manufacturing of 400 mine-protected armoured vehicles per year.

The vehicles are designed for use by armed forces, internal security and law enforcement agencies, in peacekeeping operations and for disaster management purposes.

The factory does not only seek to manufacture such vehicles for Jordan, but it also seeks to produce such vehicles for the countries of the region and the entire world, KADDB Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Moayad Samman told The Jordan Times over the phone Saturday.

About 400 jobs were created by the facility, which already includes all required machineries and equipment for production that will start in 2009, said Samman, adding that delivery will start next year.

Stressing that several countries showed interest in the facility and its production, Samman indicated that the factory will help also attract a cluster of complementary industries required for the production of the vehicles.

The establishment of the enterprise will involve substantial increased investment in facilities, plant, machinery, technology transfer and training, according to a statement received by The Jordan Times. The facility will meet the requirements of the Jordan Armed Forces and other countries in the region.

The South African-designed vehicles will enter into full-scale production in the Kingdom under a joint collaboration between Jordan Manufacturing and Services Solutions Company, (JMSS) a wholly owned subsidiary of KADDB, and the Paramount Group, which provides complete turnkey solutions to the defence, peacekeeping and internal security requirements of countries around the world.

The vehicles make use of the latest generation of armoured vehicle technology and will bring substantial industrial capacity to the region, the statement read.

Ivor Ichikowitz, executive chairman of Paramount, said: Paramount has the fullest confidence in the countrys ability to become a major defence equipment manufacturer, and as such we have selected Jordans KADDB as one of our primary global partners.

This project represents the largest-ever initiative between the South Africa and Jordan in the field of industrial cooperation it will provide an important platform for the development of substantial defence and technology collaboration between the two countries that will grow way beyond this initial project, Ichikowitz added in a presser on Thursday.

Founded in South Africa in 1994, Paramount Group has diverse manufacturing facilities as well as support and service capacities on location where required.
