Jordan could export uranium by the year 2020, according to the president of the Atomic Energy Commission of Jordan, Khaled Toukan. Jordan has 65,000 tons of uranium, which is enough to meet the energy needs of the country for 90 years, Toukan was quoted by the official news agency Petra.
Jordan will build the first plant for the production of uranium in 2015, Toukan said.
Jordan is committed to its plan to build a nuclear reactor by 2022 with a total power capacity of 2,000 megawatts, said Toukan, adding that the plant will provide electricity at a lower cost. The nuclear program is crucial for Jordan, which imports about 97 percent of its energy needs per year, which sums up to around 20 percent of the country gross domestic product, Toukan noted.
