India was not going to be a mirror image of Pakistan, a land created for a single religion. Instead pluralism was to be India’s creed, and a secular India laid claim to Kashmir by promising justice for all faiths. But today if secular India is replaced by a de facto Hindu Rashtra does the very premise of Kashmir’s accession begin to look flawed?

Kashmir is ours, but Kashmiris are jihadis, thunder internet nationalists signaling that they prefer the real estate over the inhabitants. Today Kashmir is a cantonment, patrolled by lakhs of security forces, its residents policed 24×7, many of its youth blinded by pellet guns, stone-pelters poised in bloody conflict with India’s army. India’s secular project has failed in Kashmir and Mohammed Ali Jinnah’s Two-Nation Theory (of Hindus and Muslims being two nations who simply cannot live together) looks triumphant

The image of a Kashmiri strapped to an army jeep is already viral, a textbook symbol of individual powerlessness against a military machine, comparable in its starkness to the lone figure confronting a tank in Tiananmen Square. Both army and protesters are tragically brutalised: exhausted troops have been pushed to the brink by wave upon wave of furiously protesting youth brought up on a daily regimen of death, imprisonment and perceptions of injustice.

In fact, the crisis in Kashmir shows India’s inability to accept real diversity. Muslims are only acceptable when they’re in small numbers, not when they exist in large numbers as in UP or form the majority as in Kashmir. Azaadi’s not a political sentiment anymore but an Islamic identity-centred ideological war against the perceived Hindu Rashtra.

For Pakistan, Kashmir remains Partition’s unfinished agenda, their hatred of ‘Hindu rule’ has spawned a terror machine. Yet the Indian state too has never been able to fully accept the citizenship of the Kashmiri Muslim. Jat protests became violent, the Hardik Patel-led protest led to the torching of homes. Were pellet guns used in either Haryana or Gujarat? No, because unlike Jats or Gujaratis, every Kashmiri protester is seen as a closet jihadist or an agent of Pakistan.

Similarly Hindutva nationalism seeks to subsume caste and regional identities into an overarching Hindu fold. The beef eater, the rationalist, the slogan-shouting student are unacceptable to this nationalism. So is the Kashmiri Muslim.

Kashmiri students face daily discrimination in universities in the rest of India. The shocking case of Mohammad Rafiq Shah wrongly imprisoned for 12 years is only another example of how the Indian state looks on the Kashmiri Muslim: guilty even after being proved innocent. Delivering governance and justice on the ground in Kashmir has always been the ultimate litmus test for India’s credentials as a secular society. It’s a test that India has failed.

Today gau rakshaks who reflect Hindu rage on the one side and stone-palters who reflect Muslim grievance reveal a brutal divide. The Kashmir crisis is a comprehensive collapse of India’s secular project as a whole. Perhaps Jinnah was right all along. Perhaps the Mahatma dreamed an impossible dream. Perhaps Nehru’s idea of India was only a utopia.

They CAN all GO TO HELL

The people of India know better ; Kashmir is not going anywhere

If the people of Kashmir want to live peacefully they are most welcome

But if you want to Fight with INDIA ; be careful what you wish for

I am not sure if jinnahs 2 nation theory triump,i am sure he was not asking for what is Pakistan today.

India is secular country any one can live here peacefully as along as they are with in the constitution of India.if some sunni wahabi dsnt want to live in India, its not the failure of secularism of India, its the wahabi ideology which dsnt allow them to live peacefully with others, you can see any where in the world its the sunni wahabis having problem with all others where ever they live.

Just still holding on to people and land that does not wants to be with you ...

Technically the land belongs to the people , and they are Part of Pakistan. It would not be fair for Pakistan to ask them to give up their wealth / property just like that.

Sometimes you just have to accept reality as it is without attachment , they did not change their mind in 70 years

It just looks bad even to younger generation to keep holding on to something that clearly was not yours

Wise people move on , like UK did with hong kong
or when France gave up central USA states to present day USA

Jinnah proposed a 4 nation theory, 3 has materialized .. .. waiting for the fourth
Any source for this or its my interpretation.he knew they cannt live peacefull with hindus,India ,Pakistan happened.
Then he knew They cannt live peacefully among them self, ethnic, punjabi Pakistan, bengali BD.
The 4th i guess he knew they cannt live peacefully with others might be sunni Pakistan and shia and others Pakistan.

Two Nation Theory was based on the Base Premise that Muslims of British India could not live with Hindus.

24 years later the world learned that they could not live with each other.

I am not so certain that the Muslims of India are fundamentally different to the Muslims of either Pakistan or Bangladesh.

What differs is that they have lived among a huge macrosm of non Muslims for generations. As their ancestors did before them.

I call that the natural state. Evolution of the Indian civilization. Organically.

What partition created was a rupture in this balance. This natural state was disturbed.

I do not think this is the nature of subcontinental Muslims alone though.

It is my premise that were a Hindu India to have been created, in the likeness of the Islamic state of Pakistan, it would have gone down essentially the same road.

We have always been a multicultural pluralistic society.

Religion is not the glue that binds us. It is the idea of being one people.

An idea that religion and it's cleave lines actually attack and destroy.

In the final analysis I would just like to propose that the biggest enemy, the mortal foe of Unity is Inequality.

Where one man does not feel equal to the other, there will be strife.

It is nature's law. And has nothing to do with just India or Pakistan.

you want land but not it's people. Now it's too late. People are all against you there.
if you start massacre than world will be against you and Pakistan will be forced to fight a fifth war irrespective of the result, india will become weaker as a result of the war.
And may be it will turn nuclear.
Kashmiris want india to fullfil the promise made to them by indian PM Nehru. It's not a bad demand or an act of war.

Two nation theory has evolved into Three nation theory.

Ideally, the Four nation theory is the best solution to South Asian problems.

Kashmir is going to be the reason causing war between the two countries.sooner or later.
