LAHORE, Jan 17: The Jamaat-i-Islami leadership has decided to contact the local Taliban in Swat and Waziristan and persuade them to give up their activities which are creating an impression in the world that Islam is a religion of violence.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the JI leadership held after the conclusion of its Shoora here on Thursday. Qazi Husain Ahmad presided over the meeting.

According to a source, all the participants of the meeting belonged to the NWFP, except secretary-general Munawwar Hasan.

The source said the party expressed concern over the beheading of state functionaries, bombing of audio and video shops and forcing closure of shops of barbers and ladies tailors in tribal areas.

The meeting directed JI Swat Amir Fazle Subhan and party leaders in Swat, Waziristan and Mohmand Agency to convince the local Taliban that the violent methods they were using to promote their ideologies were not Islamic. It called upon them to stop such activities so that the West might not use them to tarnish the image of Islam.

Hypocrats of JI :)

They know very well that Army had wipped these miscreants out and now after operation has come to a virtual end, suddenly JI rememberd to score some points.

Jana,

Their efforts can still be useful - in terms of convincing some militants to back down from the violent approach - because the hardcore militants will keep fighting until they die. This may give some militants an "out".

Personally, I think that the Taliban ideology has more to do with the psyche of the average Afghani than anything else.

NO it will not As the hardcore militants are associated with the Baitullah Mehsud and Al-qaeda not the Taliban.
If it was only Taliban than we might not had seen the violence in Swat as Taliban had never threatend disintegration of Pakistan not even Mullah Umer had asked for attacks against Pakistan Army.

And those sided with the hardcore have no chance now nor they will cease.
the key allies of Fazlullah had already been killed and captured.
While the ordinary people in Swat and Malakand now have got the sigh of relief.
ABOVE All the people of Malakand are far enlightened in views and they never in the past too never ever supported the extremist views hence the JI decision is merely a drama since they know well that elections are coming and they can not muster support of people regarding election boycott.

Further i believe if they were so sincer with the image of Islam and country they would have done this in the start when Fazlullh was streaching wings.
its all face saving as the people of Swat had now seen the real faces of so-called religious parties.

And let me Tell you one more vital information :)

any check posts have been set up which are now manned by Locals there and they are determind to hold any militants this time by themselves.

I think if our political leadership can unite in condeming terrorism it would be very helpful.

The label "ÄQ" and "Taliban" is used very liberally all over the world, and it appears this label is attached to the convenience of the point being raised.

Can someone, without semantics, explain the difference and the difference in ideology?

Also where does the AQ dissolve and the Taliban begins?

Merely "wiping out miscreants" doesn't gurantee a definitive solution. The movement as a whole is self perpetuating. You kill 10 and there will be 15 more to take their place.
