CHENGDU: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Thursday called the joint Sino-Pak venture of manufacturing JF-17 Thunder aircraft a “flagship of Pak-China friendship” which would strengthen the defence ties between the two countries.
During his visit to the Chengdu Aircraft Design and Resource Institute (CATI) and Chengdu Air-manufacturing Company (CAC), the PM expressed satisfaction over the pace of development of the “modern and potent” combat aircraft. He was briefed about the capabilities of the aircraft, its design, production phases and future plans.
Aziz said induction of JF-17 aircraft into the Pakistan Air Force would enhance its capability. He was informed that two more aircraft would arrive in Pakistan in July and another four in December this year.
The PM was told that Pakistan Aeronautical Complex Kamra personnel were being trained in China.
Aziz also opened a new consulate general building in Chengdu, the third in China after Shanghai and Hong Kong. He said the consulate general would bolster cooperation in all fields between the two countries. The complex in Sichuan province will cover the fast emerging parts of Western China and neighbouring provinces.
He said Pakistan and China were determined to reinforce their exemplary friendship by contracting strong ties in economic and trade fields. “We are determined to leverage fully the natural economic complementarities for common development of our peoples,” he said.
The PM said the two countries stood by each other and shared views on major international issues. He said Sichuan and Punjab were “sister provinces”. Despite the economic development, he said, Chengdu had retained its traditional charm and maintained an atmosphere of tranquillity and harmony.
He said establishment of the consulate would help people in Sichuan to visit Pakistan and develop business partnerships.
Aziz praised the Chinese government and Sichuan provincial and municipal authorities for their cooperation in establishing Pakistan’s third consulate general in China.
Sichuan Vice Governor Huang Xiaoxiang said the two countries would sign an agreement for developing cooperation between the Punjab University and the Sichuan University.
The PM’s entourage consisted of senior advisor Syed Sharifuddin Pirzada, Culture Minister Ghazi Gulab Jamal, Industries Minister Jehangir Tareen, IT Minister Awais Leghari, Investment Minister Zahid Hamid, Science and Technology Minister Nouraiz Shakoor and Minister of State for Religious Affairs Aamir Liaquat Hussain. app

Pakistan to export JF-17 thunder aircraft
CHENGDU (April 20 2007): Pakistan announced on Thursday that it would start export of JF-17 thunder aircraft jointly with China after its planned production in 2008. "Pakistan would recover its investment through third countries sale as joint sale and marketing with China," says an official statement issued by the Pakistani officials here after the visit of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.
The prime minister inspected new manufactured aircraft and visited manufacturing facilities and appreciated China for making unprecedented progress in defence production.
The statement also said that 16 aircraft planned, eight to be inducted by each side. Two aircraft arrived in Pakistan in March and participated in National Day Parade and two planned to arrive in Pakistan in July and four in December 2007 as training of Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC), Kamra, manpower is in progress in China.
Infrastructure at PAC along with various other facilities is planned to be completed by end of 2007. Pakistan would be able to build up its own aviation industry a big step forward in the field of indigenisation and self-reliance. The permit revives the chance of supplying 150 Chinaâs JF-17 fighter jets to Pakistan and the $238-million contract for delivering aircraft engines from Russia with the optional extension to $3.75 billion. In presidentâs administration, they donât think deliveries will cloud military and engineering cooperation of Russia and India, which budget is estimated at $1.5 billion a year. President Vladimir Putin personally supervised the deal and inked sanctioning documents, representatives of presidentâs administration specified. The deal was backed up by all parties concerned â Defense Ministry, Federal Industry Agency and Rosoboronexport, which is the state exporter of weapons.
But the sanction doesnât mean adding Pakistan to the list of states of direct military and technical cooperation with Russia. It is rather the matter of a single contract.
Under the contract with China, Pakistan will get 150 JF-17 Thunder (FC-1) fighter jets worth $2.3 billion overall. In 2005, Rosoboronexport made a $238-million contract with China to deliver for FC-1s a hundred RD-93 engines, spares to them and to provide maintenance. Beijing is ready to buy up to 1,000 engines, should they be upgraded for thrust augmentation. In this case, the aggregate budget of contract will step up to $3.75 billion.

Russian government officials have given the green light to the supply of the JF-17 Thunder aircraft powered by the Russian RD-93 engines to Pakistan.
The report comes when Kommersant daily reported Thursday that Moscow has issued a formal permission to China to re-export Russian-made engines to Pakistan.
Quoting a Russian government source the paper said Russia and China had reached an agreement on "The joint assembly of the JF-17 fighters equipped with the Klimov factory's RD-93 engines and their marketing in third countries."
The source said the planes will be sold to Pakistan and some countries in South-East Asia and Africa where "The Chinese have traditionally had strong positions."
Azerbaijan has recently showed interest in the JF-17 Thunder aircraft and the Ministry of Defence is likely to talk on this deal while paying an official visit to Pakistan.
"President Vladimir Putin personally supervised the Chinese deal and put his signature to the (re-export) clearance documents," Kommersant was told in the Russian President's Kremlin administration.
The engine re-export permission opens the way for the supply to China of 100 RD-39 engines under a 2005 contract worth $238 million. China mulls increasing the order to 1000 engines provided their thrust is increased, Kommersant said.
This is a great news for Pakistan, it should improve defence ties between the two countries and it is certainly a good news for Klimov.
The paper claimed that the deal does not mean that Pakistan has been put on the Russian defence supply list. "It is a one-time contract," it said.

Well seems like, we have finally BOUGHT the Russians. China is expected to ask for 1000 more engines IF thurst rate is increased that means it is ready to export the aircraft to the third world countries with the same engine that was being denied.
