In the latest sign of Japan's increased activity in the disputed South China Sea, the Maritime Self-Defense Force's largest vessel, the helicopter carrier Kaga, linked up Friday for bilateral exercises with the U.S. Navy's Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier strike group, both countries' navies said.

The bilateral training is part of a rare, month-long tour by the Kaga and two guided-missile destroyers that will see them make port calls in India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines. As a part of the dispatch, which began Aug. 26 and will run through October, the vessels will also conduct joint exercises aimed at bolstering combat skills and improving cooperation with each country's navy, according to the Defense Ministry's Maritime Staff Office.

The office said late last month that the MSDF would also train with the U.S. Navy.

During Friday's training session -- which involved U.S. ships based in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture -- the two navies practiced sailing in formation, maneuvering procedures, as well as replenishment-at-sea training. They also exchanged naval liaison officers.

On Monday and Thursday, two U.S. Air Force B-52 bombers from Anderson Air Force Base on Guam conducted training in the vicinity of the South China Sea before returning to the island territory, the U.S. Pacific Air Forces said in a statement released Friday. In addition to Thursday's routine training, the B-52s also integrated with the Reagan strike group.

Still pursuing this strategy? ASEAN leaders don't like the interference and the provocation.

Do US-JP military exercises need to be united? I always regard JP as the appendage of US.

Jealous? But then again, most likely you never served in the PLA, so what would you know of military affairs to comment credibly on US-JPN military relationship?

Yeah, Japanese and Americans not doing for free. ASEAN prefers diplomacy, US just wants to provoke ASEAN so they can get in. Middle East already fallen into their trick. Look where they are now.

Man, who will profit when the US and Japanese don’t show presence in the SC sea? You probably will tell: Iran :woot:

Boy, Chinese are the biggest hooligan in the region. If nobody stands up, they will rape everybody and take everything while singing the peaceful rise song.

Yeah sure, US will rob you blind will they distract you with China. They want people like you to fight China while they swoop in and take the cake.

You are too naive. Vietnam had to fight against the armies of 5 Chinese dynasties before a country as US was founded. It’s better if two big dogs fight each other to decide who is the boss than one big dog dominates the street while small dogs suffer. Balance of power :-)

If two fights nobody wins. Vietnam would be left with with scraps. Are you naive?

Let's hope they dont decide to excercise their selfproclaimed "freedom" to spill oil into our sea again or ram into some civilian ships on the way or dump another of their rusting helicopters into our sea.
