'Japan wants to supply radar and other military hardware to Bangladesh'

I know but I am a bit surprised they didn't keep the aero engine tech in house. The Japanese fighters are all American. Japan has the technical know how necessary to produce any jet engine and any advanced fighter jet, yet they did not. To the very least Japan should have kept an indigenous passenger airliner industry, no doubt if they wanted it would rival anything the Rolls Royce, Pratt&Whitney, GE, Boeing and Airbus can produce. The Boeing-Airbus duopoly could easily be a trio poly.

Not strictly true with aero-engine tech.

Their P1 Maritime Patrol Aircraft has indigenous engines and they are developing a 5th generation fighter engine for their new-gen fighter.

Their next-gen fighter F-X is due for service in 2031 and they have already run the XF9 engine that will power it.

The Japanese have always retained the option to break away from the USA. They have the missile tech and can produce nuclear bombs in 12-18 months in an emergency situation.

PS - The F-2 is really a Japanese fighter with a US engine, although based on F-16 airframe. The USA even borrowed the airframe technology that Japan developed for it.

Japanese actually have a very advanced and comprehensive weapons industry - in some sense comparable to the French where they are better in some areas and worse in others.

Unlike some others they always retained the ability to go it alone if the relationship with USA was one day going to end - they have their own electronic/radar systems on fighters/ships and make their own submarines, tanks and missiles

If they started exporting then I see them offering high quality products at competitive prices.

BD should not buy any major systems from them as they are heavily allied to the USA and India anyway will be able to influence them due to large market and strategic calculations vis-a-vis China.

Yes I knew about the P-1's engine. It's surprising that they can produce engines whenever they need even though they are not regular producers of engines. But then again it's Japan, nothing about them surprises me.

They have been producing jet engines on planes such as trainers for decades.

Yes it is not the same as developing them for fighters and jet-liners but it meant that the Japanese could keep up with the core tech.

I hope it's true. Japan will need it today or tomorrow, the Chinese don't have good intention for them. They really should become realistic now and get rid of that treaty and start re-arming themselves. I doubt the US will stop it, the US needs strong allies against the Chinese.

I am not sure about this part. It equally applies to American and Europeans if we buy something major from them. Heck, it even applies to the Chinese, they haven't started showing their colours fully yet.

USA/Europeans would be useful against Myanmar.

Japan voted at the UN with Myanmar over Rohingya.

Chinese are extremely useful as a weapons supplier against India.

BD should buy a mix of Chinese/European and Turkish weapons while it slowly builds up its own weapons industries.

USA/Europeans are chameleons, they will change their positions as per their interest. I don't think they will support us against Burma.

Burmese have put their eggs into the Chinese basket now.

Unless they somehow change sides, not sure they would dare as China is a neighbour, West will come on BD's side.

The west will try to bargain with the Burmese whether they will join their side, if they can convince them then they will dump BD and help them instead. Burma is strategically more important to the Chinese as well as the west. The Chinese can use Burma for access to BoB, at the same time the west will try to bring Burma close to them to deny Chinese access to the BoB. It's not going to be a revenge or punishment action from the west, they are politically far mature, rather it's going to be an effort to use the situation to pull Burma to their side.

Burma is a Chinese satellite state and they take Chinese orders pretty much. That is the price of Chinese protection in 2017 and since then.

They will be terrified of what China can do to them if they try to go with the West - Chinese does not even need to directly take military action as they can just arm the rebels and set Myanmar on fire.

If you think about it BD has the West on its side over Burma as it is just a proxy game to them over China.

West is far away but China is right next door and we need to remember that.

Possibly, I am not actually sure about the the Burmese issue. IMO, there is no good solution for the Burmese issue at the moment.

There is no "fix" for the Rohingya issue at this time.

BD is singularly focused on economic development and that is the way it should be. Myanmar has little to lose whereas BD has a lot with all the infrastructure being built and FDI coming into the SEZs that are being built all over the country.

Maybe one day the savages will decide becoming actual human beings is in their interest and having good relations with BD makes sense. They can sell billions of dollars of food, natural resources and electricity every year to BD then. BD made that offer over a decade ago but they did not accept.

decade ago but they did not accept.

It's perplexing, it's not because of the junta only. It's them, the Burmese nation. There is an irrational hate they have for us even though BD was never a bad neighbor with them. It boggles my mind and makes no sense.

There actually was a proposal for BD to fund the building of specific hydroelectric power plants in Arakahan and the subject of food exports was also brought up I think.

If they accepted BD would be buying billions of dollars worth of food, natural resources and electricity every year from them by now.

It was a mutually win-win proposal and BD itself would have had less reliance on India.

The only thing I can think of is them not wanting BD to progress even though it would hurt them as well. That is how screwed certain mindsets can be I suppose.

Anyway we are off-topic now on this thread.

'Japan wants to supply radar and other military hardware to Bangladesh'

Japanese ambassador to Bangladesh Ito Naoki has said that a Japanese company visited Japan, following interest shown by the Bangladesh armed forces. The company wants to sell military hardware, including radars, to Bangladesh.

The ambassador made this disclosure at the DCAB talk event Tuesday morning, while discussing future cooperation between the two countries. The event was organised by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh.

When asked which Japanese company had visited Bangladesh to discuss supply of military hardware, Ambassador Ito Naoki said that representatives of Mitsubishi Electronics had come in this regard.

He said that in recent times Japan had relaxed its laws regarding the export of military equipment. Following that, Japanese companies had begun exporting military hardware to certain countries in Asia. Such processes were already underway with Vietnam, Philippines and other ASEAN countries.

Mentioning that the defence sector could be a new area of cooperation with Bangladesh, Ito Naoki said this area had opened up when Bangladesh expressed its decision to diversify its source of procuring military hardware.

"I hope that the two sides continue discussions in this regard," he added.

The event, moderated by DCAB president Rezaul Karim Lotus, was also addressed by the organisation's general secretary AKM Moin Uddin.

My explanation is, it's probably grounded in history. The history of Mogas and Portugese pirates raiding Bengal and Bengal Sultan conquering Arakan. I believe they have an inferiority complex too, the are too primitive and backward compared to the sophisticated Bengalis.
