NUSA DUA, Indonesia--Japan's pledge to provide 2 trillion yen ($26.1 billion) in infrastructure construction support to ASEAN is intended to pave the way for a "southern corridor" that would connect southern Vietnam with Myanmar (Burma).

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's promise to provide funding will be a boon for Japanese companies seeking to move into India.

The proposed link would improve distribution networks between India and Japan with the construction of roads and ports.

Of the 33 major infrastructure projects that Japan will help fund, six are closely related to the southern corridor.

The idea is to link Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam with Phnom Penh in Cambodia and Bangkok in Thailand, and end up at the Dawei Seaport in Myanmar, which faces the Indian Ocean.

If maritime routes can be established to link Japan with Ho Chi Minh City and Dawei with India, ships headed to and from Japan would not have to go out of their way to pass through the Malacca Straits, a major maritime transport base that is rife with piracy.

New routes would heighten safety and decrease the time and cost of shipping.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, which is taking a leading role in infrastructure export policy, is aggressively seeking ways for Japanese manufacturers to set up bases in India, a vast market with high annual growth."

If a parts supply chain could be established between Japan and India through the southern corridor, Japanese parts manufacturers would reap huge benefits," said a high-ranking ministry official.

A major point for the corridor's construction will be the development of the economic special zone at Dawei in Myanmar, which currently has no overland routes to Thailand.

Economy minister Yukio Edano met Nov. 18 with Tin Naing Thein, Myanmar's minister of national planning and economic development, to discuss the development of Dawei. According to ministry officials, both agreed that the project was of high importance.

At the ASEAN summit meeting, Noda said, "We will work together on studies for the development of economic special zones in line with requests from Myanmar."

I would like opinion of all chinese "scholars" on PDF on this matter. After being pushed into a corner in ASEAN and now even signs of Myanmar coming closer to US, what are their thoughts on this? :P

good news. Japan is also a big investor in western and eastern freight corridors. this will be another great move.

China 'constructive' on South China Sea rows, says US

"We don't have a claim, we don't take sides in the claims, but we do as a global maritime power have an interest in seeing these principles applied broadly," he said.

I wouldn't call being pushed to the corner when America praised China's approach shortly after and signified that they are not taking sides. Only the naive would think anything have changed since when in fact the situation haven't changed much at all, it is still America playing India, Japan and its neighbours against eachother :azn:

Bearing in mind the fact that politics changes means no one should be alarmed of any changes. Just like how no one should be alarmed that Taiwan is coming closer and closer to China. It's politics afterall, money and ability to project power makes the difference in many scenarios. What matters is who has the ability to play and keep up the pase for longer. Not jumping up and down in joy for small victories but to look at the overall picture. China is rapidly growing and both America and japan are in decline :azn:

While isolating India China has become aloof on world stage. India will be Stalingrad of Chinese. I would be worried if i am chinese.

Believing US means accepting our self fool's.

Woah... Japanese are going full steam ahead to unite entire Asia against the Middle Kingdom eh? This is sad even if positive; all because of one expansionist Red party, even the common Chinese citizen is made to change his opinion.

GREAT news.Lets forget about PRC for a moment,no need to give them so much importance. If this project fructifies, just imagine how much economic benefits it will bring to those countries!!
REGARDS. . . . . . . . . . . .

Good news for the development and peace in the ASEAN region and it will also help against the devils spread.

China is the biggest trading partner of Japan, Vietnam, Myanmar and India. Enough said :)

Believing US means accepting our self fool's.

It is the fools that believes every bit of published media without first looking at the overall picture. Fact is no one truely believes anyone, unless they want to end up like Libya, Iraq, Tunisia, Afghanistan or Egypt etc.

come on dear just admit it now!china is feeling the heat.India is going ahead with it's plan in south china sea, show us what have you got and who is jumping with Taiwan coming closer? We are looking at overall picture ,what about you?Let's see how long your U-turned pase after Bali summit continues.

It has always been a game of chess and you bound to recieve and pass on the heat. No surprises there. Fact is nothing much have changed and China is still committed to its goals just like anybody else who has claims to the cake.
