In korean war the chinese had the geographical advantage....being to so close to the battleground..it was easy for them to resupply, and send in forces............

USA OTOH equalled this advantage of the chinese.thereby the splitting of korea.......If a war is going to take place for this islands...its going to be naval war mainly...and Chinese navy as of right now is no match even for the Jap navy ......the chinese numerical superiority means nothing in this scenario

Since the islands are too small to allow for mass landings by either side to hold the territory, any war over the Diaoyudao/Diaoyutai will be limited to China employing A2/AD strategy while America's strategy would rest on breaking through and managing to continue presence and power projection with the help of its regional security framework in East Asia.

The JMSDF is currently the strongest navy in Asia (aside from Uncle Sam), and indeed one of the strongest navies in the world despite lacking blue-water capabilities. PLAN on the other hand has historically been the weakest branch of the PLA, which is why in recent years they have embarked on a rapid naval modernization drive. Its effects and implications are already being felt by the United States and generated much speculation and attention, which itself is a testament to how much the Pentagon views it as a direct challenge to its own capabilities in the region. In the short term it is unlikely that PLAN will be able to gain an upper hand against the JMSDF and the 7th fleet, it would probably take at least another decade before PLAN can hold its own against USA in a regional naval exchange.

china has no first use policy .With their present economic growth and political clout .....they wont jeopardize any of it for this islands

Atom bombs are useless in this case....

It is safe to take nuclear weapons out of the equation, unless in the extremely unlikely event that the United States launch a nuke first, since China has a no first-use policy. If nukes are launched it is safe to say that at that point some islands out in the sea colonized by a few hundred goats living there will be the least of the world's worries.

The islands are in range of land based aircraft, but not from Japan's side. A combination of air assets, submarines, surface combatants and land based missiles would easily take care of any intrusion.

The dominant air force in Asia is the PLAAF.

It is in land based aircraft range of both countries........hence atleast for next two decades it is not possible fore China to use force to claim them .....

the islands can be occupied within say a few days but they are difficult to defend. If we can gain the consensus of Ma's government to jointly manage the Islands after regaining occupation, we will be in excellent positions to hold off any intrusions

And actually tourists are cancelling their Japan visits. We are the no 1 visitors in Japan if I am not mistaken!

That is if you actually add Mainland China, HK and Taiwan all together. However I am surprised that the high number of Taiwan tourists to Japan though.

I seriously doubt that those tourists who cancelled their trip to Japan are going to make any serious dent on Japan's tourism as those who are boycotting Japanese products are going to affect the Japanese export to China.

The water has been calm without much ripples until the Noda sucker punches us with this "purchase of the island" decision which aimed to serve for increasing his popularity in the coming election.

Feel pity for people from a so large country playact for little islands and so on pitiful resources beyond with a so tiny and pitiful country.
