Japan also wanted to go for its own 4th gen fighter bypassing US F-16 in the 80s but US didn't allow it. Lets see whether they can prusue this project independently. A worthless white elephant such a F-35 is already being offered to them. And last but not least, Japan should come to accept the reality that they can never compete with China militarily and should agree to returning the Diaoyu/senkaku Islands .

The Japanese need to tear up Article 9 and be turned loose . Let them gear up !!!

I don't think the Japanese pose any threat to US interests. Let alone security.
It didn't show much hostility before Pearl Harbor either....that's why it was a surprise....if there is any nation on the planet that has the potential to counter American superiority from an economic and technological point of view it is neither the Russians nor the Chinese....it is the Japanese!Japanese people are a symbol of civility and gentleness and humbleness now but remember when they had power they almost took over Asia with horrific brute force. The US knows that and I do not think they are going to let the Japanese powerhouse loose again!

Pfft......the Americans already turned them from a nation of Samurais to a nation of sissies. They won't go back up again like they did in WWII. Shin Shin or not.

We have no problems competing with other countries in those fronts. If we did, we would have put the military smack down to Japan back in the 80s, especially after Japan said this...

"The Japan That Can Say No: Why Japan Will Be First Among Equals" (「NO」と言える日本 "No" to Ieru Nihon?)[1] is a 1989 essay originally co-authored by Shintaro Ishihara, the then Minister of Transport and leading LDP figure who would become governor of Tokyo (1999-2012); and Sony co-founder and chairman Akio Morita, in the climate of Japan's economic rise. It was famous for its critical examination of United States business practices, and for advocating Japan's taking a more independent stance on many issues, from business to foreign affairs.
Unlike wars, economic and technological defeats usually came from within. Japan did not came to 'first among equals'.

And you are wrong when you said that Imperial Japan did not showed 'much hostility' towards the US before the surprise attack on Hawaii. The US and Imperial Japan were in constant negotiations regarding Japan's conduct in Asia and the failure of them led to the economic sanctions by the US. What made the attack on Pearl Harbor a surprise was its tactical audacity, not strategic thoughts possible by the Japanese military because a war against the US was already contemplated by Imperial Japan.

Why does all Japanese military hardware remind me of Robotech/Macross.. or perhaps some of those kids ace combat type aircraft

But scrap Article 9 and move out of Japan ultimately they will gain enough military strength to counter China and Korea. And then they are going to ask us to move the Pacific Fleet and I do not think our Navy will comply with that. Why risk repeating history when we are just doing fine now?
