Japan stealth jet prototype set to fly in 2014

2027?

They'll make it much before that if they really want to remain out of the threat zone beside them.

But why did you refuse them the Raptor? Japanese are more American than you Americans since post WW2.

What danger can you face from them? They literally love you guys more than themselves.

Its more about leaked technologies. Remember Israel (one of Americas most trusted allies) gave American tech to the Chinese.

. . .
Could somebody explain whether Japan can achieve this, by objectively looking at it?

1. Radar for a 5th generation fighter - @gambit what would they need to do this?
2. Engines and Design - @Oscar what would they need to do this?
3. Missile - Can we assume that they will go in for US weaponry?
4. Sensors and Software

What components do you think, they can source from the US and what will they need to do themselves? Since, they rejected the F-35, we can assume that they are looking for something better, which, can counter the J-20 and less of A2G role?

China or Japan? The thread is about Japan's fighter

Right now, the only radar player worth spending money on is the ESA, particularly the active version. Anything less and might as well wave the white flag.

1. The Japanese are way ahead in electronics. After all, they led the world in electronic innovations and manufacturing technology. The F-2 for eg with its J/APG-1 was perhaps one of the first AESA radars fielded in a fighter(before even the Russians and Europeans). So their experience with AESA system and manufacturing AESA systems is very good and they can easily come up with an excellent radar.

2. Japan has been locally manufacturing engines for jet aircraft. Plus, they have access to technology.

3. They already have excellent missile systems in the AAM-4 and AAM-5.

4. They are more than capable..

Modern development [70s-80s]:

Mitshubishi F-1/T2

Kawasaki T-4

F-2 [more US inputs without US help F-2 project would never have been initited completed still a big credit goes to US]

Sure technologies have far reached but calling Japanese magical people that "can do anything and everything" No that is not agreeable had they, they would have come up with indgenious project in 70's 80's 90's againt F-15, F-18, F-4s hell they could not develop anything indeenous to replace F-4s. Good that they are working on ATD-X late but good initiative we wasted 80's 90's and even early 2000s hanging around US for much help. Agree to disagree.

Good development in AESA and some other system but largely Thanks to US.

Again ATD-X would only be successful if US joins in and I am certain the project can only move fast paced if US joins in and import sub systems components/systems from F-35 it is essentially going to be similar to F-2 project...under the hood F-35's systems.

55 million dollars for the first ATD-X trials

September 9, 2013

(Defensa.com) The Japanese Defense Ministry has asked the government for 55 million dollars (42 million euros) to begin the installation and first tests of the fifth-generation fighter ATD-X F-3, starting next year. The amount will be used primarily to flight test, including test engine, dual flow turbojet with afterburning bypass XF5-1, to great heights and hull resistance tests of the aircraft. It was in March 2012 when it began the process of assembling the first prototype, which will become the first fighter 100% Japanese manufacturing in the past 70 years.

The project was born ten years ago driven by the need for the country to have its own technology to manufacture fighter jets. The contractor responsible for the design and execution of the testing phase, which could begin in 2014, is Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), while it will be the Japanese government itself, through JASDF and Technology Research and Development Institute (TRDI) which are responsible for finalizing the details.

The ATD-X ("Advanced Technology Demonstrator-X") would replace the Mitsubishi F-2 (the Japanese variant of the F-16 Fighting Falcon) the JASDF operates. It has the latest stealth technology, is equipped with multimode radar antenna system with active phase, tendrá 14.1 meters long and 4.5 meters high, with a wingspan of 9.01 meters and a maximum take-off weight of 8 tons.

For the purpose of implementing counter capability against stealthy and/or numerous enemy force, the research on the integrated fire control for fighters is conducted. Onboard sensors and weapons in a fighter’s formation are controlled by an integrated fire control system. Critical technologies for realizing the system are ‘In-Formation Secured Data Link’, ‘Passive Tracking’, ‘Trajectory Data Fusion’ and ‘Sensor/Shooter Resource Management’.

To establish the weapon bay system for future fighter aircraft, this project investigates the complex flow field in and around weapon-bay by both wind tunnel testing and numerical analysis, and aims to comprehend the stores release characteristics in such a flow field.

The XF5-1 is an afterburning turbofan engine, achieving top level thrust-to-weight ratio, compared with the world trend. And the engine is planned to be applied to the Advanced Technical Demonstrator Aircraft. The engine tests are conducted with the aim of realizing the first flight of the aircraft.

In order to realize a high-power and slim Next-Generation Engine for future fighter aircraft, the research on the core engine components (combustor, high-pressure turbine and compressor), with relation to aero-thermodynamic, structure and material technologies aiming at high-temperature, high-pressure and lightweight, is in progress.
