Japan No Longer an Export Powerhouse

ELEANOR WARNOCK
Higher energy imports played a role in Japan’s record current-account deficit in November. But the data is a sign of a more fundamental change: Japan’s three decades as one of the world’s biggest exporters may be over.
From the 1980s until 2010 Japan exported more than it imported, supplying the world with electronics, machinery and other goods.
  • That changed in 2011, after the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Japan’s nuclear power plants shut down, pushing up imports of other fuel and tipping the trade balance into deficit.

Those reactors remain closed and Japan’s huge fuel imports, compounded by the weak yen, are widening the trade deficit.

But even stripping out fuel, Japan would be running a meager trade surplus at best. A major factor is that Japanese companies have moved production offshore, to cheaper centers in China and elsewhere.

Those goods show up in the export statistics from, say, China, not Japan. Japan’s ambitious monetary easing, meant to weaken the yen and lure companies back onshore, so far has failed to entice firms back.

“Only a small number of companies brought back factories to Japan as the yen weakened,” said Junko Nishioka, an economist with RBS Securities in Tokyo.

Japanese exporters also are having a hard time competing with other nations, especially in the smart phone market. Japanese consumers are now increasingly buying imported goods such as electronics that were once the mainstay of the nation’s exports.

“There’s a loss of competitiveness of Japanese manufacturing,” said Izumi Devalier, an economist at HSBC in Hong Kong.

That’s showing up in weak export numbers. Exports in yen terms are expected to rise 9.8% in the current fiscal year, but that gain is largely due to a weaker currency making earnings look larger in yen terms, according to the Japan Foreign Trade Council. Imports, meanwhile, will rise 14.1%, driven by higher fuel needs, the council estimates.

The value of liquefied natural gas imports will likely rise 13.9% in the current fiscal year through end March, but imported devices like smart phones will rise 25.7%, cars 14.6% and clothing 24.8%, according to JFTC forecasts.

The current account, which measures trade and net income flows, should turn back to positive territory in the second quarter this year, many economists say. But that’s largely due to sizeable earnings from overseas investments, which will help mask a continued trade deficit.

“In the 2000s, Japan earned income from the twin trade and income surpluses, but we’re in a new structure, where a surplus in the income account makes up for a trade deficit,” said Sojitz Research Institute chief economist Tatsuhiko Yoshizaki.

Turning the nuclear reactors back on – which is still the subject of heated political debate – could help narrow the trade deficit by reducing fuel imports. But even here, the effect is likely to be limited.

Hiromichi Shirakawa, chief economist at Credit Suisse in Tokyo, said that would help reduce the gap, but it would “not be enough to change the course” of Japan’s trade patterns.

For Japan, these issues have various impacts. The government wants more business to come back onshore, raising wages and consumption and ending years of deflation. If this doesn’t happen, Japan’s economy might sink back into the doldrums.

In economic terms, a large current account deficit means a gap between savings and investment. That could mean Japan has to rely more on foreign investors to fund the gap in the future, a risky strategy for a country with one of the world’s largest stocks of public debt.

Things can only become worse for Japan, without China's market,Japan's economy is doomed .Now S.Korean enjoys a stunning economic boom based on good relations with China.

I will miss SONY, and Sony Ericsson fading together. Panasonic, SHARP, SANYO also losing their China market.

China Household Electric Appliance Company: Hair, TCL, Konka, Hisense, Lenovo, HuaWei, ZTE, Miui, Meizu, CHANGHONG, Oppo, Coolpad, Galanz, Midea Groups etc takeover above Japan corporations.

Military + Economy, China beat Japan.

It's doomed anyways, regardless of Abe.

We have our own brands, as time passes it will have the same prestige and reputation. It's already just as good, for most goods. So why would one pay more for a good that is the same or less?

Before certain people jump the gun and say Chinese goods are this and that, only the cheap goods go out right now, we have no reputation and prestige so most if not all of our good stuff can only be sold in house and be successful.

Japan will go back to being an afterthought in east Asia, like the old tributary system, Imperial China, Korea, Japan, than Vietnam.

Korea will have a special place in China, not least because they are the most populous foreign people in China, and one of the biggest of the 50 something minorities.

Besides Xbox and Sony PS. Does any Chinese brand have an alternative to gaming?

China switched a lot trade to S.Korea

The last time I bought a Japanese brand product was over 13 years ago in 2000。

For me the choice is between Chinese and German。

And occasionally British。:azn:

South Korea Is Considering The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) But Will Prioritize Bilateral Free Trade Agreement With China
By Sophie Song
on January 13 2014 10:45 AM
South Korea is happy to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), but its negotiations seeking a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) with China will take priority over joining the TPP.
The Trade Ministry of South Korea said in a press release on Monday that the Korean government “will first push for a South Korea-China FTA as a bridgehead for expanding presence in Chinese markets, while considering joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership,” the Wall Street Journal reported.

South Korea has been an advocate of free trade -- which the TPP aims to regulate -- but it has thus far focused on bilateral deals, as multilateral agreements like the TPP are complex and slow to come to fruition. It has separate free trade pacts with the U.S., E.U., Chile, India, Peru, Singapore, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the European Free Trade Association.

The nation hopes to come to new trading terms with its biggest trade partner, China, which absorbed 26 percent of South Korea’s exports last year, according to South Korea’s Trade Ministry. The bilateral trade between the neighboring countries reached $221 billion. The free trade talks have been ongoing since May 2012.

“China is South Korea’s number one trade partner, and there is no question that the talks will take priority this year,” said one Korean negotiator who asked not be named, according to the Wall Street Journal.

A deal eliminating 90 percent of import tariffs between the two countries could boost South Korea’s economy by 3 percent over the next decade, officials believe. In particular, the deal would help South Korea’s automobile, textile and petrochemical sectors, said Ronald Man, an economist for HSBC.

The TPP currently involves 12 countries in the Asia Pacific region, including the U.S., Australia, Japan and Malaysia. Once inked, the TPP member nations' economies would make up 40 percent of the global economy. The pact aims to overhaul trade relations among member nations and establish new rules in areas as diverse as intellectual property, labor and the role of the governments in private enterprise.

The proposed partnership has been seen as a threat to China’s international trade influence by some, but the U.S. has said that China and other nations are free to join the TPP as long as they can abide by partnership's rules.

Negotiations on the TPP have been underway for four years, but progress remains slow. While many heads of state involved had said they hoped to reach an agreement by the end of 2013, the terms of the partnership involving trading heavyweights have yet to be finalized, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Messing with Chinese won't end up well for Japan, China can use her sheer economic might to knock off Japan. Winning a war without firing a single shot. the tremendous toll inflicted on Japan's economy has already clearly shown.

No worries, Japan has a lot of counter measures to save itself. Let's see:
1. Pay more visits to yasukuni shrine.
2. Donate more money/weapons to Philippines, Vietnum and other south east Asian countries to check China.
3. Team up with India, the beacon of freedom.
4. Buy more weapons from the U.S.
5. Pay more visits to yasukuni shrine.
6. Did I say Pay more visits to yasukuni shrine?
