China Central Television is state television, so seeing propaganda isn’t unusual. Seeing a militarized Mobile Suit Gundam flash on the screen is.

Yesterday, CCTV show Focus Today reported how Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe “clamors” for war against China, mentioning all the weapons Japan has with the U.S. as well as the secret weapons Abe doesn’t want the world to know about.

Weapons, I guess, like Mobile Suit Gundam. Apparently, the show didn’t specifically mention Gundam when it briefly appeared on screen. Below you can see how the image was used in context—note how it is included with a helicopter and a naval vessel:

Here you can watch the full news report.

It’s baffling that Chinese state news would use Gundam to scaremonger, especially because Gundam is popular in China.

This is the first time the country’s media has tried to make Japan’s Self-Defense Force terrifying. Back in 2013, Chinese newspaperGlobal Times confused a Japanese helicopter with DeviantArt.

No Chinese TV, Gundam Is Not a Real Military Weapon

China wouldn't stand a chance if Japan had Gundams.

I understand you can read some Chinese, what do you think.

lol, to be honest? I always am entertained ! The way Chinese media covers any subject relating to Japan or Japanese foreign policy, defense policy is always entertaining to read and see.

Let's talk about gundam scientifically, guys. I understand that human-size humanoid robot can be made to make use of already existing weapons (mostly small arms), but really anything bigger than a car can be made without taking shape of human. What is the advantages of huge humanoid robots?

@Nihonjin1051 can I ask you your opinion about gundam, from the perspective of one having Japanese culture and military background?

A 60-foot tall robot has little advantages as the height itself will give away its position, it is expensive (around $725 million when it was calculated way back in 2008, and with current economic situation, it could go up to a billion US dollars). Adding to these is that due to its height, it is a nice target for anything that flies and has missiles, rockets and bombs as its payload, and if it gets destroyed, you just wasted tons of money.

Second is that that would have been a logistics nightmare - what's the point of having a large and powerful unit if it could only run for 1 hour at best, and fitting it with nuke engine would be worse, specially when it gets blown up. Its ammunition would have been similar to a tank - a 60-ft tall mecha would have an assault rifle that is about 120mm in caliber, this being the common tank ammunition for Western tanks' guns (125mmm for China and Russian tanks' guns).

Third is that you already have IFVs and MBTs to do the job, and they can be hidden inside a building and has sufficient armor protection against current small arms. Why need a really large weapons system if your targets are very small.

But if you really want a mecha, I say go for something smaller like these:

According to their canon sources, these mechas are less than 15-ft in height and its firepower would have been similar to either the Russian BTR-T and BMPT or the American M2/M3 Bradley.

Or

Just give your conventional soldiers or special forces powered armor like this

Walkers are plausible. Combine the firepower of a combat vehicle with the mobility of infantry (in complex terrains). The question is if we leave the control of such machine to human pilot or AI, as they should be the first target to be taken out in an infantry squad (and easier than an BTR or Bradley or even a Humvee, for sure).

Or could it be once walkers become popular in the army and combat, gundam is born as a countermeasure againts them, like there used to be tank destroyers in WW2?

Most likely such vehicles would be remote-operated, like this robot in the movie "Chappie"
