Japan competes w/ China in Bangladesh

Without questioning Japan or China's ability to build that port, I think India has that capability, maybe we can develop it jointly with Japan, well, if Bangladesh permits!! :-) Btw, how many billion dollars you think would be required to build that port?

Bid for the project just like everyone else, if you have the technical capacity and are able to be price competitive with either the Japanese or Chinese then why not? The project will most likely be between $10bn-$15bn at current prices with funding having to initially come from the winning nations exam bank. Good luck.

@Nihonjin1051 Bro, thanks for your confidence in our country. Consider Bangladesh as your own country and your own second home. We welcome Japanese people and investors with open arms.

What? China out, Japan in? You will sell your one little country to how many nations?? :o:

Thanks bro! I love how our national flags are almost very similar. ;)

Actually so similar that Japan can lodge a case of copyright violation against Bangladesh!! :D

@Kaniska ,

Is there really such great mistrust amongst Indians for China and the United States? I had always thought that there was a Culture of 'Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai' amongst Indians and Chinese.

Was that a joke?? :-)

With a population of 154million, a rather Large market at that.

Only number of people doesn't measure the real size of a market, their purchasing power is the most important factor.

We have given 4 billion dollar of soft loan to Bangladesh, . :)

Sonadia port interests China, but not Burma. It is a dillema that BD and China must solve with Burma.

I don't think Burma's interest has any significance. Even if we fail to connect Chittagong with Yunnan, Sonadia port would still be fine as our own foreign trade will be enough to sustain such port.

Do you really think India can afford to fund such projects overseas when they themselves need $billions to build some basic infrastructure like toilets?

Yep if you read your own words a loan that has to be paid back with interest, and tied to buy indian goods and services. It's so that indian business can get trade. The same as China, Japan, Korea, us, uk, Germany....etc...heck even little ole Spain does the same.

The facts are a lot of the paper loans actually never get used, it's way better and more cost effective to have a competitive commercial transaction then these tied transactions.

More the enough, in fact essential if you look at the rate of our export growth past 2 decades. The rate of growth will in most likelihood expand exponentially.

A. We haven't even opened our markets.
B. All our exporters have just concentrated on RMG to a handful of countries (US, UK and Germany) and we are already no 2 after China. Imagine when we look beyond those nations and actively focus on other EU buyers, Russia, South America, etc and eventually even of all places China...LOL.
C. We are already examining other sectors not just RMGs.

We are going to need our own deep water port real soon.

The design of the Japanese flag comes from their name "日本".

日 = Sun

本 = Origin/Source

I believe the Bangladeshi flag is also meant to symbolize the Sun.

China simply don't care. They didn't care when were working with Japan and US. They don't care because it is not in their national interest. There are some problems between China and Japan but China knows that business is business.

This is true. In fact Japan and America are two of our largest trading partners, it would be hypocritical of us to complain if other countries also do business with them.

The loan was for 20 years with an interest rate of 1.75%, it's a soft loan, and a part of the 1st tranche of that loan was converted to grant ($200 million out of $1 billion) , and that grant amount was bigger than the total interest to be paid for 20 years @1.75%. :-)

Yes, it does. :)

That means Japan can sue Bangladesh for not only copying the design of their flag, but for copying the concept behind it also!! :D

That's true, our foreign trade seems to witness exponential growth in the coming years. The best part is industries other than RMG have started to take off, mostly pharmaceuticals, shipbuilding, electronics etc. We are already an emerging player in pharmaceuticals. Bangladesh to emerge as 'power house' in drug manufacturing.
However, the Sonadia port needs to be built at the quickest possible time. The recent development of new terminals at Chittagong with Chinese assistance has increased the effectiveness of the port a bit but the demands will exceed the current capacity in near future.

The green background represents the rich fertile land and the red represents the people and their sacrifice for the nation.

We need to encourage industrial production away from dhaka. Right now Khulna port is underutilised and trafic from dhaka to chittagong is too high, the government needs to greater development and industrialisation in other cities such as Comila, Khulna, Sylhet, Rajshai etc. To much pressure is placed on Dhaka region to quickly, no city can cope with fast a growth.

Don't get me wrong I am not anti indian or against any religion, I am how ever pro Bangladeshi and as a Bangladeshi (at least half of me that is) I do not consider india as a trustworthy and reliable neighbour.

Makes sense...I like to talk with people who are Pro BD ....They are more genuine people beacuse there are some BD here who are more anti Indian than Pro BD...Never mind...I do not want to derail this thread..

Likewise I prefer to debate with logical people, Indian, Pakistani, Nepalese, Sri Lankan, Chinese or where ever. Unfortunatly too often youll find soon as any thread is started that brings good news from BD there is a few indians who are guarenteed to get upset and start to derail/troll the thread, we all know who they are.

I appreciate your rational arguments, refreshing.

On topic, I think in the end your going to see a consortium of investors in this project. This is a priority project for BD so they will part fund it, your going to see multiple donner agencies and the private sector. We all know the three stage project is going to far exceed the expected minimum of $10bn and more then likely cost above the $15bn mark.

We currently have a short window of about 7-8 years before the situation becomes a major problem and starts to become a bottle neck to our development.

Spot on...and its very rational analysis...

Who is denying that you do not have a sizable market and of course BD is a growing market for investment...You guys are just too much with your own narrative..Even my narrative is not to do bussiness with India rather it is economical for exporting anything from BD to middle east to go through Indian land route rather than crossing all together from Srilanka coast and reaching middle east....You can have your own ego and i personally have lot of respect for BD people....

And if i start talking in your language, come on dude. India surround you 3 sides of your border, You can hate India, BD can not go to any country in land routes by passing India....You will be delusional to feel that you can bypass India with any initiative and be heaven for investor...

Nowadays, trading by land route is the most expensive way to do business. A lot of extort charge on the way, robbery or hijacked risk, fuel consumption and so on will giving an headache for any businessmen to moving their goods in large scale by land route.That's why Sea line of transportation and cargo bear the brunt when you are wants to moving any goods and parts in today trading economy.

consortium is a dead end proposition. India and Awami League used that "consortium" to stall the project because they know parties will never agree with each other. At any rate truth is this port project did not see the daylight in last 7 years Awami League in power and will NOT do so until Awami League is kicked out.

The whole purpose of building the Sonadia Deep Seaport is quite different from just building new terminals in Ctg. port. In the Ctg. Port 250,000t large mother vessels cannot enter because of shallow draft there. There are two nearby deep sea ports where the mother vessels anchor, cargoes for BD are unloaded on smaller vessels there and are carried to Ctg. Port and vice versa.

Two nearby deep ports are in Singapore and SL. Bangladesh wants another deep port of its own which will serve Ctg., Khulna, Kolkata, Orissa, Indian NE, China, Nepal and Bhutan. However, China route is uncertain because Burma may not allow a BD-China link up via its land which may make the port unprofitable with smaller revenue being earned there.

But, if Japan invests in BD in a big way it will open a new opportunity because foreign trade with cargoes made in the Japanese owned factories will compensate for the lost business with China's Yunnan.
