Dhaka, Dec 4 (bdnews24.com)—Jamaat-e-Islami on Tuesday took responsibility for the attack its supporters made on a US Embassy vehicle in Dhaka during the shutdown and offered apology.

The activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student front Islami Chhatra Shibir have been damaging public property for days and then vandalised and torched vehicles through the day countrywide shutdown. But the party only apologised for this incident.

"On 4th December, at around 8.45 AM, a US Embassy motor pool vehicle was attacked by a crowd causing minor injuries to the driver and damage to the vehicle," read the press statement posted on the official website of the party whose top leadership is currently behind bars on charge of committing crimes against humanity.

"After carrying out a preliminary inquiry into the matter, we accept responsibility for this unfortunate incident, which is the first of its kind. We condemn it. We offer our apologies to the US Embassy and to the victims and will provide compensation," the statement continued.

The website attributed the statement to their Acting Secretary General Md Shafiqur Rahman.

Jamaat enforced the strike to demand release of its leaders standing trial for war crimes at International Crime Tribunals.

Its activists have been clashing with police since last month to press home their demand, and never regretted even after setting a policeman afire.

The US Embassy last month asked the Bangladesh government to sit in dialogue with Jamaat to end the confrontation.

The suggestion caused ire among people and the government rejected it outright.

USA blasts attack on embassy vehicle during JI strike

DHAKA, Dec 4, 2012 (BSS) - The United States today blasted an attack on a vehicle of its embassy in Dhaka also injuring the driver along with several policemen during the Jamaat-e-Islami enforced hartal and demanded the perpetrators be exposed to justice.

"The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms the attack on our diplomatic vehicle in Dhaka today," a US embassy spokeswoman told BSS as approached for comments on the incident.

She said Washington places a "high priority on the safety and security of diplomatic personnel and any attack on diplomatic property or personnel is an affront to the entire international community".

"We call upon the perpetrators (of the attack) to be held accountable for this unprovoked attack on a diplomatic vehicle and its innocent occupants," the spokeswoman said.

The embassy vehicle was attacked near Pragati Sharan and Airport Road in Dhaka during the early hours of the nationwide stoppage while the embassy said the driver was now being treated for his wounds.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured driver and the injured policemen," the embassy spokeswoman said.

She noted that police launched an investigation on the incident and said "the US embassy appreciates the assistance and support from the Government of Bangladesh and Dhaka Metropolitan Police to protect American citizens and US embassy property in Bangladesh".

Jamaat hierarchy along with BNP are very pro USA. The elites of bd do not give 2 rats arse about israel and palestine. The occasional statement you will find is to satisfy the masses.
