This is where it gets tricky everyone, these two aircraft are basically the same, except the j-7 is the chinese reverse engineered version of the mig-21.

they originally were a joint operation, but the sino-russian split caused russia to cancel it's research of the MiG-21 with china.

that said, they eventually gave the technology and kits to make it to the chinese, the chinese found the documents they came with were useless and they remade the documents and rebuilt the airframes fixing over 280 problems.
