J-16 radar indeed better in many ways. Radar doesn't mean it has better chance of winning competition. This competition can be close range and play different missions. It is not just 2 vs 2 fighting with PL-15. J-16 is not stealth so they can afford to use big flashlight and J-16's AESA can be more tuned in different way because it doesn't quite need to always operate the same way for stealth fighter radar which requires low probability of detection. Since J-16 can be detected anyway they shoot the energy beam far who cares. Just example of how two powerful AESA can be very different. J-16 maybe can see further it's possible.
J-16 definitely is so much more better and useful than J-10C. It can fly around China's eastern coast and carry 12 missiles basically double J-10C. J-16 has much more powerful radar and the technology level is equal between them just tuned to different fighter strategy.
Golden Helmet is 100% to test pilot and not hardware. One year J-10C wins one year J-16 wins just depends on games they play and who is piloting. Su-35 all the rumors are saying is quite impressive in many ways J-11 and J-16 cannot match like turning, controlling, and thrust vector. Su-35 also has some different philosophy which PLAAF want to investigate. Unfortunately they found the weapons and electronic systems not quite as good for modern war and radar is very powerful with one mode of long range search but unsophisticated and not quite as useful in real life war. Maybe just rumors or Russian sold export version to China only. Anyway we use Su-35 to eastern region before and now near India too. Signal intelligence from Japan and Taiwan probably risky to fly best PLAAF fighters near so just J-11B and old J-10 and Su-35. Against India I don't know how good their signal intelligence is but PLAAF place older planes in border regions always and models like Su-35 which PLAAF doesn't operate many.
The rumors about J-11B receiving AESA upgrade instead of purchasing more Su-35 because PLAAF want more fighters very quickly. J-20 manufacturing is probably very slow due to expensive and difficult tasks. Chengdu also busy making J-10C now with WS-10 engine and Shenyang looks like is now busy with J-16, new J-15 model, and J-35 soon. So PLAAF wanted more Su-35 or quickly upgrade J-11B to take AESA and PL-15. Now decision is probably going with J-11B upgrade to AESA because Su-35 electronic abilities cannot offer what J-11B with AESA and PL-15 can do. Also we will have to buy many Russian weapons and parts to keep so many Su-35 if purchased. I don't think they think Russian missiles can play with Japanese and Americans. Definitely what they will sell China will not be the best and even still downgraded from that.
Reason for this worry and quick upgrade is because old fighter like early model F-15, F-16, J-11 and even old Rafale and Typhoon have no chance against good electronic warfare and radar combined with good missile. J-11B is same usefulness as Mig-21 against one F-35. Basically there is no point even flying to just lose the pilot. So best way is go with AESA + PL-15 first and upgrade some software and electronics. This area makes most difference and improvement. Su-35 unless Russia will give their best radar and electronics will not even be as useful against modern airforce like USA or Japan. Against India now Su-35 is fine and better than MKI maybe even better than Rafale unless India's Rafale purchased AESA version and full range of missiles. China doesn't want war against India so we need all modern radars in fighter next to retire which is J-10A and J-11B series. The older stuff is really pointless but cannot replace them quick enough so PLAAF has hundreds of J-7 and J-8 keep around. This is why we buy Su-35 to check it out and Russia will not sell less than 24. I don't think PLAAF will buy more but we will see AESA radar for J-11B and perhaps J-10A if they figure it's worth it and can be done with good results.

Looking forward to this year's China-Thailand exercise
J10AorC VS JAS 39
The JAS-39 was disappointing. Close range our J-11B win and long range is no point because early 2000 fighter vs 2010 fighter radar technology. One game when we have J-10, we won both long range and close range. Saab claim they have some mysterious jamming technology which NATO airforce in exercise mention is like transforming JAS-39 Gripen into stealth fighter and fool Typhoon even. Maybe Sweden decide not to sell this in case China gets to examine it from Thailand. Otherwise without this ability, Gripen is not so good. Very small range and cannot carry much more than JF-17. Best thing about it is turning ability is good but still J-11B even can win in close range games. At worst in real life should be about the same level.
Really we can only exercise against Thailand and Pakistan and Russia to test fighters from different designs. The only scary thing is F-22 and F-35. For them we need hundreds of J-20 and J-35 quickly and better missiles. Maybe Anjian flying with J-20.
