ackie Chan and Sonu Sood’s Indo-Chinese martial arts movie Kung Fu Yoga failed to make an impression in India, but it’s making a killing in China.

Box Office Mojo reports that the film, which also stars Disha Patani, has so far earned $180 million worldwide. That’s Rs 1200 crore. Out of this international total, $179 million comes from China alone.

It was reported by Forbes that the film made less than Rs 4 crore on its opening day in India.

It didn’t help that the film was received negatively by most major publications. It currently sits at a 46% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.

The Hindustan Times review declared, “Kung Fu Yoga feels like a film that was made up on the spot.”

So out of 180 million, 179 was made in china and only 1 million rest of the international market.

Article does not say how much it made in indian market, it just says it flops.
And it says it made less that 4 crore on opening day. So i am guessing weekly could have hardly crossed 50 crores.

Btw highest grossing of dangal in india is in range of 400 crores.

Btw, kunfuyoga made very good collection in china, so it does not matter if it flopped in india, it must have made good profite overall.

seems like there's some cultural appropriation. at least they used India actors here and not use white actors and pretend they are indian like how they do it in hollywood so often haha.

Kungfu Yoga shows India in a very positive light. All Indians must watch it; hilarious entertainment and full of action.

It just hit the screens in Taiwan but I watched in Mainland during my very brief Spring Festival visit two weeks ago.

Does it matter? China market is most important and Chinese are rich enough to buy a ticket and watch the movie. Couples going out for movie is a lifestyle. Many youngster in China can afford that.

If it strive in India or other international market but flop in China then it will be a disaster. How many Indians goes for movie compare to Chinese? I don't think u need an expert to tell you that. An in China, movie ticket price varies according to the movies popularity.

Just like automobile market. China is the world biggest automobile market. It does not matter if you flopped in other market but dominate in China becos Chinese market is the benchmark and most important. Many Chinese have deep pockets.

It doesn't matter much from the revenue perspective but Jackie chan has a good following in India and It was expected to do good in India.

To answer your second question. Most of the Indians go to movies and a good lot of people go there quite frequently. Average movie ticket cost 4-5 $

even if you have big pockets doesn't mean you don't need new markets

I think films is one area where we should cooperate more often. Though with better understanding of each other. Some of the movie props and costumes were a little too stereotypical. And this is not due to intentional hurt but simply due to very less people to people contact.

Only a people to people contact on a larger scale can alleviate that.

There was a time when India only spoke Sanskrit/Tamil while Chinese only spoke Mandarin/Cantonese etc and yet India and China were great civilisational friends.

I am sure with today's technology, we can further progress to develop ties and re-establish old links again.
