The first attempt to define, categorize, and rank global cities using 'relational data' was made in 1998 by Jon Beaverstock, Richard G Smith and Peter Taylor, who all worked at that time at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom. Together they established the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. A roster of world cities was outlined in the GaWC Research Bulletin 5 and ranked cities based on their connectivity through four "advanced producer services": accountancy, advertising, banking/finance, and law.[5] The GaWC inventory identifies three levels of global cities and several sub-ranks. This roster generally denotes cities in which there are offices of certain multinational corporations providing financial and consulting services rather than denoting other cultural, political, and economic centres.

The 2004 rankings acknowledged several new indicators while continuing to rank city economics more heavily than political or cultural factors. The 2008 roster, similar to the 1998 version, is sorted into categories of "Alpha" world cities (with four sub-categories), "Beta" world cities (three sub-categories), "Gamma" world cities (three sub-categories), and additional cities with "High sufficiency" or "Sufficiency" world city presence.

The 2010 roster of leading Alpha, Beta and Gamma world cities is as follows:

I think population plays an important role too... Ankara is very well organized and propably hs the most well planed city in Turkey but she has population around 4 million.

I don't think that is the case here because there are some cities, which have a population arround 4 million or less, in this list.

please can someone tell me other than finance what is good about london? i live in london and went london eye and central london a few days ago and i went istanbul last year istanbul is heaven compared to here , the buildings in istanbul the structure even in central london theres dirty graffiti walls etc i think its rubbish ( im not talking about economical side and black money laundering city its better known as)

I think it is becuase you are Turkish and miss Istanbul very much. I had to stay away from Istanbul for 6 months when I did my millitary service and I missed Istanbul like crazy. The first thing I did when I came to Istanbul was to arrange myself a small city tour which included Beyoğlu, Galata and Sultanahmet districts.

Although I love Istanbul very much, especially Fatih district (old-city) and bosphorus, Istanbul is far from being a livable city when compared to London or Paris or Berlin or other European major cities. With its highly crowded population and traffic jam which makes you spend hours every bussines day, our governers have to work very hard to make it better place to live.

listen i live in london and other than their organised traffic like all of europe and a few more better organised things i think istanbul is much better or turkey has the problem bad traffic organisation not even markings on roads its very hard to get licence here

so true. i was there for a week before driving to Konya and it was a mess. the traffic has to be dealt with. if you take public transport it is good. but for someone who doesn't live there the city is a labyrint.

i love Istanbul but that city has to be better in transport, like Tokyo.

EDIT: i am surprised Tokyo is a Alpa+ and not ++ city. much bigger and better than London and New york.

and where does Dubai come from? is it a central hub or something? i just know that rich people/sheiks and toruists go there. not much of a working place.
