ND university dismisses 5 Chinese students for poor English skills

DICKINSON, N.D. - Five Chinese students with poor English skills have been told to leave Dickinson State University, a North Dakota institution that prides itself on a diverse student body.

The blame does not fall on the students but on officials with the Chinese company that placed them, DSU President D.C. Coston told the Dickinson Press.

"They did not abide by what they had agreed to do and they have done a great disservice to their fellow citizens," Coston said.

Officials with the Hecate Center of Cultural Communication did not immediately respond to an emailed request from the Associated Press for comment today.

Coston said the students are not allowed to enroll because they failed a required test given to those who speak English as a second language. They had been allowed to preview classes while they awaited the test results, which arrived Wednesday.

Students from eight foreign countries were among those who took part in Dickinson State's winter commencement in December. The school advertises itself as having an "emphasis on educating a diverse and international population." Coston said the dismissal of the five Chinese students is regrettable but necessary "for the integrity of this institution."

Ronnie Walker, the school's director of multicultural affairs, and her staff explained the situation to the students with the help of an interpreter.

"They're understandably emotional about it," Walker said. "It's a tough decision to come to the
United States to study and they've made commitments to that. Understandably, they're upset by it, but they're coping."

The school will refund tuition deposits and absorb the students' housing and meal costs, Coston said.

At the Telegraph, Malcolm Moore reports on the increase in obesity among Shanghai’s schoolchildren, in the wake of China’s first competitive eating contest:

The latest report from Shanghai’s Jiaotong university said there has been a 25 per cent rise in obesity in Shanghai’s primary schoolchildren over the last decade, with 13 per cent now overweight and almost half of those also obese.

Officials have blamed China’s starry-eyed rush to emulate Western culture, the plethora of fast food now available, and the tendency of parents in one-child families to express their affection through food.

“The kids have a bad diet, a sedentary lifestyle and very little knowledge about sports,” said Paul French, the author of Fat China, a book exploring China’s changing diet. “Type II diabetes is a huge problem, and dentists are complaining that they are pulling second teeth in children as young as 12,” he added.

By contrast, China Daily reports that children in poor areas are “chronically underfed”, focusing on Cuihua township in Yunnan province:

News came to light that malnutrition was widespread among students in the poor county after an online post revealed that students at the elementary school can afford only two meals a day, mainly potatoes.

One child said his biggest wish was to eat a watermelon, the post said.

Eight to nine students [at the township's elementary school] generally share two dishes and one soup.

What racist?? University is supposed to provide higher education its not a charity organization to tech the basic language.

Also, if they don't know the English why they have came into America fully knowing that they have to understand the language if they want to go through higher education.

US Customs and Border Patrol says crooks have been changing what they ship and how they send it to American consumers.

While China is still the starting point for most knockoffs entering the US market, pirates and counterfeiters have given organized crime a new look in the last year.

Shoes, wallets and handbags fell off the top-10 list last year and were replaced by consumer electronics. One-third of those electronics were cellular telephone knockoffs.

Numbers in the latest annual report say fake Chinese goods accounted for 62 per cent of pirated goods with a dollar value of $124.7 million seized before they got into the country last year.

Counterfeiters have switched to higher volumes with less value instead of focusing their efforts on items with a higher sticker price.

The value of footwear seized from China fell almost $20 million, but the value of pharmaceutical seizures increased more than $4.3 million. The value of fake Chinese perfume seizures rose $7 million.

The top-10 list of knockoffs seized at the US border last year included: pharmaceuticals, health/personal care, eyewear/parts, critical technology components, electronic articles, cigarettes, perfumes/colognes, batteries, exercise equipment and transportation/parts.

As for who shipped them, Canadian crooks were in the minority. Canada accounted for $608,533, less than one per cent of the goods seized at the American border.

Although there is a lot of generic medicine from India which was regarded as counterifiet(IPR), but it only accounted to 3% of the total.

On the other hand China accounts for 80%(62% from China and 18% from Hong Kong) of all the fake stuff in America that was caught.

Think of all the counterfeit stuffs that never get caught.

Still you need to pass any English proficiency test, without that getting into any US universities is hard. Even if its sponsored.

Yeah its quite bad these international chinese students. In our uni they were allowed to take English-Chinese dictionary to the exams

And I hated it when I was put in group assignments with these chinese international students. Not because they were dumb or anything, but their english was so bad and they just don't get the concept of "plagiarism and referencing".

This guy once copy pasted everything from wikipedia for our project report Lucky I found out while proof reading, would have gotten us failed and in a lot of trouble. After that incident whenever I had chinese international students in my group I just did all their work for them. Couldn't risk it

'80% fake products seized in US comes from China' - The Economic Times

WASHINGTON: Fake Chinese products are flooding the US market raising concerns among US officials, who are now proposing to run specialised training for Beijing Custom officials to check the menace.

"As much as 80 per cent of the fake products seized in the US are originating from China," US officials have said, adding that such large scale dumpings have been going on for the past five years.
