GSLV MK1 was first tested in 2001 while MK3 full test is planned by 2017 .

They are not parallel programs and are of different class . So I don't understand what do you mean by bridging the technological gap .

Let's assume that we are 40 years behind america,after the succes of mk3,how many years will be bridged?

In that case the rockets comparable to MK3 are French Ariane 5 and Chinese Long March 3B .

Both were first tested in 1996 . So a successful MK3 test in 2017 means bridging a gap of almost 2 decades with those countries .

If it is successful in reaching Mar's orbit, it will do its programmed work remaining in the orbit. After that when its work done we can crash it on Mars and call it Mars Landing....
