BENGALURU, OCTOBER 8:
GAGAN (GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation) developed jointly by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Airport Authority of India (AAI) is more accurate than any other global positioning system currently available, the ISRO chief has said.

“GAGAN is better than any GPS as it ensures that at any given point in time, the measurements are reliable,” AS Kiran Kumar, Chairman, ISRO, said on the sidelines GNSS users meet 2015.

Reliability
“Standard GPS measurements can at times be off the mark by a significant value, but GAGAN-enabled signals can be relied on all the time. That is why aircraft are using it,” Kiran Kumar said.

Other space-based navigation systems are GPS of the US, Glonass of Russia, Galileo of Europe. GAGAN and the upcoming Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) of India aim to enhance the capability of GPS to provide accurate information, specifically for aircraft navigation.

Referring to the common usage of GAGAN on the ground, Kiran Kumar said, “Right now cell-phone users are using Gagan-enabled positioning system.”

ISRO enabled speed post services of India Post to spot the nearest post office through the satellite system in Mysore recently.

Constellation of satellites
ISRO will shortly complete the constellation of seven satellites to efficiently operate GAGAN.

“This has been our major focus. After completing it, we are looking at how we can roll out in Saarc countries and later take it global,” Kiran Kumar said.

“Currently it is a thought process. It will become reality as we are working with a few of the countries and add more countries. At present it is 1,500 km beyond Indian borders, same way we can add regional things and make it global, that is one thing we are working upon. We are in talks right now with South Korea and the Gulf countries. We’ll expand slowly. Maybe in a decade, we can do it,” he added.

“Only regional users can take advantage of IRNSS now. GAGAN is a part of global system already. Any aircraft with satellite-based receiver can make use of it.”

Just don't understand why Indians have to be bigmouth all the time! like:

Mumbai surpass Shanghai by 2009 by former Prime Minister
India to be Superpower by 2012 by Indian President
ISRO will surpass NASA in 10 years
"Mother of All Dears" on MMRCA program for the past 13 years
............................

Don't you get tired of slapping your own face all the time?

But GPS is not from
India. So to Indians, anything made in India is better than anywhere else. Indian politician claim that India will surpass NASA in the coming decade.

An idiot is an idiot but a stupid is a headache. First learn what is GAGAN it is developed to correct GPS signal with better accuracy. Your country never launched an apple, so please don't bother to criticise others.

One of the reason is they have 7 satellites to coves relatively small area I guess.

GAGAN will be the world’s most advanced air navigation system and further reinforces India’s leadership in the forefront of air navigation. GAGAN will greatly improve safety, reduce congestion and enhance communications to meet India’s growing air traffic management needs,”

- Andy Zogg, VP, Command & Control Systems, Raytheon Network Centric Systems

The reason why ISRO claims GAGAN to be the best in class is the unique positioning of its GEO and GSO satellites in orbit and its advanced ionospheric algorithm - The unique Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) /Geo Synchronous Orbit (GSO) constellation design provides a position accuracy of better than 15 metre (1.5-metre in the horizontal, 2.5-metre in the vertical) for longer duration of 20 hours in a day even with 4 satellites. GAGAN ionospheric algorithm known as ISRO GIVE Model-Multi-Layer Data Fusion (IGM-MLDF) developed by ISRO is operational in the implemented GAGAN System which is a significant breakthrough in this concern.

India has become the third country in the world to have such precision approach capabilities with GAGAN being the first SBAS system in the world to serve the equatorial region.

Back in early 2000's to begin implementing a satellite-based augmentation system over the Indian airspace, Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) codes for L1 frequency and L5 frequency were obtained by India from the United States Air Force and U.S Department of Defense. Good to see the crucial experience and expertise gained through the same has finally paid off in GAGAN's development process.

So ? No one stays on the top forever accept it and have a sound sleep.

ISRO please do not acquire bad habits from DRDO. Let your work do the talking.
Ha? Absurd logic, it's like saying why announce that wr have discovered water on mar or moon we should wait till we make use of it.

Yaa ISRO is the organisation which got slap in face by sending probe to mars successfully at the first time

LOL.....

Perhaps our indian enemies need to learn that the real military GPS is accurate to within a few feet, it's the civilian version (service) which is intentionally not that accurate for obvious reasons. btw my personal experience with Garmin has been exceptional, its pretty darned accurate for driving

Does this mean all world except India is working with unreliable GPS?

The civil aviation ministry is in talks with aircraft manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus to implement the new GAGAN GPS-aided navigation system.

“All new aircraft might come with the GAGAN navigation system, but before that the instrument needs to be standardised… the work is going on,” said officials.

Each aircraft will cost at least a couple of crores extra with the new navigation system implemented in it.

However, officials said that mandating implementation of GAGAN in the existing planes owned and operated by carriers might not happen, as it would require grounding of aircraft for quite a long period of time. It would also require supplimental type certificate (which is required if any new instrument is introduced to an already running aircraft), which would further delay the process of implementation in existing aircraft.

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has agreed to provide a 5% subsidy on the receivers. It is also in talks with all airline companies to install the new navigation system. As a part of a trial run, AAI has implemented GAGAN in 50 airports. V Somasundaram, member, airport navigation and surveillance at AAI said, that GAGAN will be implemented across all airports in a phased manner.

Officials said that the GPS-aided navigation system is far more efficient than the current one. While radar based navigation system allows manning of two planes in the airspace at the same time, GAGAN allows the air traffic control (ATC) to operate 50 planes in the same time frame. It also improves efficiency and increases fuel savings — as planes will have to circle less over the airports — reduces the workload of flight crew and ATC, and allows vertical guidance at runaways.

You are talking as if chinese space program can keep all deadline targets. Then why they can't succeed in mars probe with the help of russians, means they also lost meeting deadline target of sending probe to mars ! In space program no organisation can keep 100% deadlines. There will be failures and so meeting deallines are hefty tasks for any space agencies.Yes it's a proud moment of india, when ISRO is the only organisation in the world can send probe to mars successfully in first attempt.
