2017 AIPAC POLICY CONFERENCE

TEL AVIV — An Israeli company whose technology made a splash at last week’s AIPAC conference has signed deals to produce drinking water — by extracting it from the air — in India and Vietnam, two countries that have long faced shortages.

Water Gen inked an agreement last week with India’s second-largest solar company to produce purified water for remote villages in the country. Earlier, the company arranged with the Hanoi government to set up water generators in the Vietnamese capital.

“The government of Vietnam greatly esteems the technological developments in Israel, and I hope that the Israeli technology that we supply to Vietnam will significantly help to improve water conditions in the country,” Water Gen President Mikhael Mirilashvili said after the signing in Hanoi, according to a statement.

The memoranda of understanding are worth $150 million in total, according to Water Gen, which was founded in 2009 and creates technology that extracts water from the air for use by civilians and soldiers who do not have access to clean sources.

Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz demonstrated Water Gen’s technology on stage at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s annual policy conference in Washington, DC, on March 26. He touted the device, which he said can produce 15-20 liters of drinkable water a day, as a weapon against worldwide water scarcity and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel.

“There is no weapon more powerful in the fight against BDS than for Israel to develop technologies that the world cannot live without,” he told the crowd. “You cannot boycott products that you can’t live without.”

About 1.2 billion people, nearly one-fifth of the world’s population, live in areas of water scarcity, according to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. Of India’s 1.25 billion people, 75 million lack access to clean water, the Water Aid nonprofit found last year. And Vietnam has struggled to provide its population of 95 million people with water because of contamination, poor infrastructure and heavy agricultural demand.

Water Gen technology is to supply drinking water to remote villages in India with solar power from Vikar Solar. The Vietnam project is to generate tens of thousands of liters of water a day for the people of Hanoi. Water Gen also said it plans to build a factory to produce technology for sale in the region.

Standing onstage inside the Washington Convention Center at the AIPAC conference, Dershowitz and AIPAC National Managing Director Elliot Brandt unveiled the Water Gen technology before thousands of delegates.

The device, they said, can produce the drinkable water without the environmental costs of bottled water.

Brandt noted Seth Siegel’s 2015 book Let There Be Water: Israel’s Solution for a Water-Starved World, which detailed the “Zionist dream to overcome water scarcity.”

“Let’s remember what Theodor Herzl talked about — the pioneers of Israel will be people who helped develop water,” Dershowitz elaborated. “And Yitzhak Rabin: originally he didn’t want to be a soldier, he wanted to be a water engineer.”

Dershowitz said the water-making innovation could be deployed to areas that lacked access to potable water.

He mentioned not only parts of the developing world such as Haiti, but also New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and Flint, Michigan, during its most recent water crisis, in which drinking water was contaminated by high levels of lead.

Isnt that a very expensive way of water production for the areas its intended for?

"No infrastructure is needed, but electricity. Plug-and-drink solution"

That sounds like a show stopper. If people had electricity they could easily buy an air-conditioner and collect the runoff.

Or of course a dehumidifier.

Seems like the people who really need this will use the cheapest method. You can buy a dehumidifier for $60. I guarantee this Water Gen will be more expensive.

Power distribution has improved in India a lot in the last 10 years. We are the third largest producers of power in the world after you guys and China.

What was lacking was a transparent distribution system.

But states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, MP etc are power surplus states with excellent power distribution infrastructure in place. These places are also water scarce in general and use river channelling to meet their water needs.

WaterGen seems to be doing the same what you suggest at a massive scale. The scale is very much important as the population that needs water is much larger.

Another problem is water created from air humidity is demineralised meaning not drinkable without any further processing which is making it even more expensive.
This thing might be uselful for desert like places with no water but no poor person wont be able to afford it.

Likely fake news, at least for Vietnam part. No newe about this on any Vietnamese popular media source. Second, Hanoi do not need this equipment for drinking water. A city of 8m can not use such equipment to solve water issue, and it already has enough water treatment plants. For remote village, maybe, but no region in Vietnam is as dry as Middle East or India.

^Genius.

If i'm reading the website correctly the large scale outputs of 6,000L using 45kw electricity. Economical.

Do you have any clarification if the company inserts additives, minerals and the like?

This is a boon for remote villages in Indian desert areas, couple it up with solar power, and people won't have to travel miles just to get water. Thanks Israel.
