Israel bans Norwegian doctor from Gaza for life

Norway's doctor of peace for Gaza, Mads Gilbert, has been hit by a lifetime ban from entering the region by the Israeli government on Thursday, The Local reported.

Israeli authorities cited "security reasons" as to why they have shut doctor Gilbert out from the Gaza Strip.

The Norwegian 67-year-old has travelled to and from Gaza to treat Palestinians. This summer, the chief physician who lives and works in North Norway, was back working at Shifa hospital, Gaza, where he treated over 50 days many of the 11,000 injured.

The doctor was attempting to return to the region in October to help in the hospital and was stopped by Israeli officials from entering.

Gilbert says: “When we came back to the Erez border station, the Israeli soldiers told me that I could not go in to Gaza.”

Now the Israeli government is stating it is for security reasons that Gilbert is banned, according to an email from the Norwegian embassy in Tel Aviv. The embassy took up the case on Gilbert's behalf after he was refused entry last month.

Gilbert himself believes the decision is connected to his critical comments against the state of Israel.

The outspoken peace activist wrote a letter to the global media in July this year, evoking the extreme conditions at the Gaza hospital he worked in.

Mads Gilbert, addressing US president Barack Obama in the letter, asked "Do you have a heart?" :

"Mr. Obama - do you have a heart?

I invite you - spend one night - just one night - with us in Shifa. Disguised as a cleaner, maybe.

I am convinced, 100%, it would change history.

Nobody with a heart AND power could ever walk away from a night in Shifa without being determined to end the slaughter of the Palestinian people.

But the heartless and merciless have done their calculations and planned another "dahyia" onslaught on Gaza.

The rivers of blood will keep running the coming night. I can hear they have tuned their instruments of death."

A Norwegian doctor has been permanently banned from entering the Gaza Strip by the Israeli government.

Dr Mads Gilbert says he was stopped trying to cross into Gaza in October. He called the move "totally unacceptable".

Israel cited security reasons for imposing the ban.

Dr Gilbert has treated patients in Gaza for more than a decade. He worked at the Shifa Hospital in Gaza City during the 50-day summer conflict.

He told the BBC he had never broken any Israeli rules during his spells working in Gaza.

But he suggested that his open reporting of the medical situation in the territory had angered the Israeli authorities.

"The fundamental reason for the ill health of the population in Gaza is of course the siege and the bombing," he said.

An Israeli foreign ministry spokesman, Emmanuel Nahshon, described Dr Gilbert as a "Jekyll and Hyde" figure, hiding behind a cloak of being a humanitarian doctor.

He said an investigation was under way into Dr Gilbert and that the decision would be reviewed.

The Norwegian foreign ministry has said it will challenge the ban.

In July, Dr Gilbert was one of the co-signatories in a strongly-worded letter denouncing Israeli action in Gaza, published in the medical journal, the Lancet.

He also described scenes in the Shifa Hospital this summer as the worst he had ever seen.

This doctor has been interviewed in French television and has also held lectures in Denmark. He was also interviewed by Danish television during the war crimes of Israel this Summer.

It's absurd to ban a widely respected doctor that is solely doing his job (saving life's) just because he has rightly been critical of Israel.

Martin Krasnik, the one interviewing him in this video below, is a Danish Jew himself. Of Polish origin. He was heavily criticized for his bias in that interview.

@Norwegian will understand it. I wonder what Norwegian will make of excesses to defend Israeli behavior this time around? Usually it's the evil Palestinians (Arabs) that are doing everything wrong while Israelis are saints.

Most of the doctors that helped Gaza this summer were actually local Arab doctors. People from the ME.

That outsiders show interest in this conflict (the most famous of all conflicts) is not strange I would say. It's admirable that brave people like that Norwegian doctor is doing what he is doing. Just like doctors and nurses that are going to West Africa to combat the spread of Ebola. I have tremendous respect for such people.

People forget to note that IF he is working so nobly as a humanitarian, then he should not be making political statements. If he is choosing to make political statements, then he cannot be allowed entry as a humanitarian. Talk about having it both ways!
