Islamists abduct more than 100 girls from Nigeria school: Security official

MAIDUGURI (Nigeria): Boko Haram Islamists have kidnapped more than 100 girls from a secondary school in Nigeria's northeastern Borno state, a senior security source told AFP.

Asked to confirm media reports that 200 girls had been taken from a school in the Chibok local government area during an Islamist attack, the source, who requested anonymity, said "the number is not up to 200, but it is over 100."

"Many girls were abducted by the rampaging gunmen who stormed the school in a convoy of vehicles," said Emmanuel Sam, an education official in the town of Chibok, where the attack took place on Monday.

Boko Haram is a radical Islamist militant group whose name means "western education is forbidden".

It has repeatedly attacked schools in the northeast during an insurgency that has killed thousands since 2009.

The gunmen came "in trucks and on motorcycles and headed to the school", where they overpowered soldiers deployed to guard it, said a witness who requested anonymity.

He said soldiers had been deployed to provide extra security ahead of yearly exams, but the gunmen "subdued the soldiers and took the girls away".

He was not able to provide an estimate of the number of girls abducted. In an attack earlier this year in Borno state, witnesses said Boko Haram gunmen surrounded a girls' school, forced the students to leave and ordered them to immediately return to their villages.

Sam spoke in Borno's capital Maiduguri where he said he fled after the attack at the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok.

Do not give these armed criminal gangs the title of 'Islamists'. Their policy and actions do not relate in any way to Islam at all even considering these poor Nigerian girls are most likely Muslims as well.

Why do you bring religion into this? Religion does not order people to take violent actions over political/tribal struggles. These people kidnapped are Muslims, so why do you immediately seek to bash the Islamic religion again?

Religion and physical peace are like science and faith, you can't claim they're in the same league since they don't relate to each other in any way. Religion is a spiritual path and in some cases a way of life for human beings. Peace is a state of the world in regards to conflict or calm.

When Islam says it's a religion of peace, this cannot mean physical peace as I explained above. Islam is a religion of spiritual peace with God in which one achieves submission to God and is at peace with his soul.

I don't think you understand what Jihad is, there is numerous types of Jihad unrelated to war and the war Jihad is not about finishing off non-Muslims. You clearly don't recognize the difference between Arabic language thousands of years ago compared to slang Arabic in modern day.

Back then, no word existed to state that one is 'defending his self', today a word does exist. It's pronounced Difaah An Anfoosonah. Back then however, to express this they simply used the Arab word for fighting while being fought, which is 'Qatil'. In the Quran when people asked what to do when being attacked God assured them they're entitled to 'Qatil' if they're being persecuted.

Islam became popular by persuasion, at one point a group of 70 companions of Muhammad went to the city of Madinah to preach Islam, they were executed and thrown into a well. So no, such an insane idea of perpetual violence doesn't exist in our religious philosophy.

Hence, this is an ideology manufactured by such militant organizations which are attacking Muslims most of the time.

Sorry, but it's not an ad hoc, as it all depends on ones definition of the modern term 'Islamist', there isn't an universally agreed upon definition. It's a creation of mainstream media which has it's own intentions which we don't need to get into.

Unfortunately, it seems like it may be a waste of time. With that logic we might as well say all past tribal conflicts, land disputes, separatist groups, slavery, militant organizations, empires, modern competition all derives directly from all religion and not only Islam. However, the obvious observation is that there is a bias here and only Islam is singled out.
