Back then Russian hardware were not as advanced as now. These days they have thermal and can attack at night, satellite and drone recon, advanced body armor, cruise missiles, cluster munitions. This makes Putin side much more deadly compared to 1980s era Soviet forces.

They may want Assad to win but they dont want to get into a costly war with Regional powers like Turkey whilst the west watches on unscathed

They didn't defeat or wipe out their enemies, they were forced to leave and the burden of the war added to their woes and caused their nation to collapse
