Islamists groups on the ground are the most powerful/organized and most disciplined/efffective, so if Assad falls im afraid they will be the ones to fill the void and take power, only that this will only lead to more infghting and another round of endless civil war as the so called moderates rebel groups and even the other hundreds other islamist groups and militias will also want power for themselves, so we will have a libya like situation. Which will put Israel at more risks as we have seen with islamists in sinai penninsula. Reason the U S./U.K/west are in such a dilemna on what next to do. Reason so far we have been using just aerial bombings to weaken these islamists groups.

To be honest, its a good thing we are not intervening with boots on the ground against these islamists, we ought to let them bleed the syrian regime,iranians, and hezbollah dry,as they also sponsored terrorists groups against us in Iraq. karma.

Mujahideen were formed of Afghans from rural areas,villages and towns... And those men had been fighting for years before the first CIA and Saudi funded .303 hit the ground (Afghanistan).... They fought with ancient weapons from WW and locally made weapons... They didn't have clothes for winter nor boots... They ate stale bread and roasted chickpeas for weeks during fighting...

I agree - given the nature of the crimes ISIS has committed, and the prevalence of those crimes, I'm not sure we could every be reasonably certain that ISIS members, claiming to have 'repented' and/or claiming to have been 'unwilling participants/non-participants', never participated in slavery, rape and the massacre of innocents.

This level of evil was not considered when the concept of 'reasonable doubt' was introduced into the jurisprudence of civilized societies.
