Russia has a high-speed quasi-ballistic missile weapon; The Iskander BM

One of the inventors of the missile system known as Iskander, Engineer Valery Drobinoga, told the media that the speed of an Iskander missile is six times the speed of the sound, pointing out that it is the first missile in the world to fly so fast and hide itself from the radar .

Drobinoga points out that there are no stealth objects that can be absolutely hidden, but stealth technology can turn the missile into a target the size of a folded umbrella that is difficult for the large radar to detect and impossible for the anti-missile head to see.

The main advantage of the Iskander system is that it is impossible to intercept its missiles -which must reach specific targets and destroy them-, with current and future means..

The 4-ton missile, 7 meters long, is launched from the launch pad at an incredible speed to reach 50 kilometers in altitude as fast as possible, and then begins to descend on the target to be destroyed by an unpredictable course.

Iskander's arsenal also includes a cruise missile that flies at low altitudes avoiding collision with the terrain.

The Iskander system can launch two rockets per minute.

And since there were rumours that it might be procured (if not already) by some middle eastern countries.. I thought of asking the experts and others on PDF to discuss what Air-defence systems can be used to intercept the Iskander missile.. if any!

Here are some facts about the Iskander missile that have to be considered:

- The SS-26 Iskander is a short-range, road-mobile, solid-fuel ballistic missile system..

- Iskander is not a strategic weapon; it is a tactical ballistic missile.. During combat operations, it will be used to destroy both fixed and mobile targets. Targets will range from surface-to-air missiles, short-range missiles, airports, ports, command and communications centers, factories and other fortified targets.

- Iskander was designed to evade missile defenses.. The weapon can maneuver at more than 30G during its final phase. It is also equipped with decoys.. As such, it is very difficult to intercept it with current missile defense techniques.

- Iskander can be equipped to carry a variety of warhead types.. They include high explosives, submunitions, cluster bombs, fuel and air explosives, penetration bombs, and grenade launchers.. The local Russian version can also be used to launch a nuclear payload. This means that Iskander is a very versatile weapon.

- Iskander warheads are equipped with guidance systems, but the accuracy of the missile depends on the type; The INS version has a probability of accuracy of circular error of 200M but with GPS and GLONASS, it can be reduced to 50M or less..and if these systems are supplemented by radar and electro-optical sensors, the accuracy of Iskander can be less than 10m.. actually it is down to 5m according to new reports..

- The strength of the Iskander's high maneuverability (compared with his predecessor Toshka) is the warhead manoeuvrable engine ..

It is a cheap missile that is meant to be launched in massive volleys at important military targets. Intercepting it will be unfeasible. It would require a massive number of interceptors and I don't think any country deploys interceptors at such a large number. Most ABM programs are meant to defend against expensive strategic nuclear missiles, they will not be able to keep up with this system.

The only counter would be to destroy the launchers.

During combat operations, it will be used to destroy both fixed and mobile targets.
I question the veracity of this claim, hitting mobile targets with a ballistic missile sounds like a complex job.

That can be done with big guided rockets.. the Iskander is much more sophisticated..

Complex but not impossible with a GPS that can give a less than 10 cm precision.. Russia has its own GPS called Glonass..

As I read in an Arabic Military website... Algeria had already purchased Iskander ???
