In a major policy decision, the government has made it mandatory for the Pakistani missions abroad to issue visas to foreigners intending to visit Pakistan only after their clearance from the country’s top intelligence agency ISI.

Well-placed government sources told TheNation on Friday that the move had come after thorough deliberations and in view of the security situation in the country. Sources privy to these developments maintained that the decision had been taken after reports of undesired activities of some foreigners especially, the Americans and foreign journalists. According to the informed sources, the intelligence agencies have taken serious notice of the objectionable activities of some foreign journalists in Gilgit-Baltistan during the recent elections. Sources said that under the new guidelines, the foreigners intending to visit Pakistan will have to give the purpose of their visit and duration of their stay with an NOC so as to hold them accountable.

Sources further said that those whose visas had expired and needed short duration visa would have to go back to their respective countries in line with the new guidelines. Pakistani origin nationals from various western countries including the US would, however, go through the same Code of Conduct/procedure for their visas.

That is good step , Because there is no Visa restrictions to come pakistan, and any one can come here and do Illegal things..

This was a good step to take. This will stop the crazies from getting visa's and then going to north waziristan.

I will never like RAW to control the citizens who arrive in India.

An Intelligence agency must assist the Foreign Office/Department , This way Now all foreign nationals will seek around an Intelligence Agency office to get cleared.

Its good that Security is beefed up, but Intelligence Agency scanning every Foreigner .. its a bit uncomfortable to me.

But of course if it helps internal security. its a welcome move.

Well said. And it is most important that RAW never goes so big as to start doing that. That job is not of RAW and it must not do it. Period. However patriotic we may be, we cannot support an intelligence agency which tries to become bigger than the nation and its citizens. All countries take care that their intellignece agencies do not cross that critical threshold. For some reason, ISI has it.

bad step ... i dont understand why is it said so publicaly? in times like these all countries do conduct intelligence checks whats the purpose here ?

most probably to send a msg or warning to someone, as ISI getting involved in such issue means something is important enough that the premiere spy agency is being involved.

As the recent media reports about US personnel and other nationals indulging in suspicious activities has risen a lot since last few months.

Few US nationals have been sent back after declaring them persona non grata, any of whose names we haven't heard in media even.

NO Problem in That.

But in State of war with Whom ?

American Civilians and Journalists can Fuel State of War ?

thats all correct we need a check on forsure but having ISI checking upon foreignors will give more bad name to the pakistani institutions .. i guess the only purpose of this message is saying in public who is control!

Perhaps you were considered suspicious or your background was suspicious. Otherwise, many Pakistanis do come and go as they please. Of course, the checks are tighter.

Sir, its a move by govt, not by ISI, but by putting ISI in the driving seat, the govt wants to send a strong msg tht enough is enough. Today also 3 foreigners held in Pindi, with cameras having pictures of important places, govt buildings and other stuff, if you look at history, journalists have been used in nearly every major conflict and war for spying purposes. Plus as i said lot of suspicious guys coming in many disguises. Plus its not that ISI will be following them in Pakistan, all it is ISI who must have a good amount of data base of foreigners and can check up people from its international sources and make sure persona non grata don't come here before visas get issued. ISI is our external spy agency, so no one else to do this job.

Its just a warning to whomever it is for, i believe you guys seeing recent history can get the it that who the audience is.

Good step but it wont do much seeing they could just get a visa or passport or whatever to Afghanistan then come through the border from there... hopefully Pak is sealing up the border.
